>>>IT’S AN EMOTIONAL DAY IN CHICAGO. FOR ONE FINAL GAME, TWO-TIME WORLD CUP WINNING COACH JILL ELLIS LEADS THE TEAM. THE PLAYERS WILL BE DETERMINED TO GIVE HER A MAGNIFICENT SEND OFF AGAINST SOUTH KOREA. WELCOME TO ESPN’S COVERAGE OF THE U.S. WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM BROUGHT TO YOU BY VOLKSWAGEN. IAN DARK ALONGSIDE ELAINE WHO KNOWS ALL ABOUT WINNING THINGS WITH THE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM. THAT’S JULIE. JULIE, WHAT A DAY THIS IS FOR JILL ELLIS. SHE’S GOING TO BE PRETTY EMOTIONAL, ISN’T SHE?>>YEAH. YOU CAN SEE IN THE LAST TWO DAYS LEADING UP, I SPENT A LITTLE TIME WITH HER. SHE ALREADY IS STARTING TO GO OKAY, THIS IS IT. IT’S FINALLY SETTLING IN. THIS IS THE LAST MOMENT. >>WHAT DO YOU THINK SHE’S BROUGHT TO THE TEAM IN THAT TIME? IT HASN’T ALL BEEN A BED OF ROSES. THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW NONBELIEVER. >>ABSOLUTELY. I THINK PEOPLE SEE THE SHINY END OF HER CAREER WITH THE 2015 WIN AND THEN THE SHININESS AT THE END WITH THE WIN IN 2019, BUT IN BETWEEN IT WAS THAT OLYMPIC LOSS. SHE SAID THAT LOSS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT OF MY CAREER BECAUSE WE GOT BETTER. WE STARTED EXPERIMENTING. JILL ELLIS HAD THE COURAGE TO DO THAT, TO TINKER, TO PLAY THE BEST IN THE WORLD. I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF COACH WHOSE COULDN’T HAVE THE COURAGE TO LOSE IN ’17 AND ’18 LIKE SHE DID AND THEN DOMINATE AS THEY DID IN 2019. >>WELL, HOW IS SHE FEELING AHEAD OF THIS 132nd AND FINAL GAME? A FEW MOMENTS AGO JULIE HERE POPPED DOWNSTAIRS FOR ONE LAST PRE-MATCH CHAT WITH JILL ELLIS. >>JILL, LAST DAY AT THE OFFICE. HOW ARE WE DOING?>>GOOD. I’M GOOD. I’M GOOD. IT’S GOING TO BE A LOT I THINK TO GET THROUGH TODAY, BUT IT’S BEEN UNBELIEVABLE. IT’S BEEN FANTASTIC. SO YEAH, I’M JUST TRYING NOT TO — I’M GLAD I DIDN’T WEAR MASCARA. MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE HERE. IT’S GOING TO BE SPECIAL. >>WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO SAY TO THE TEAM?>>WE KIND OF HAD OUR MOMENT YESTERDAY BECAUSE I KNEW TODAY WOULD BE HARD, BUT I JUST TOLD THEM IT WAS AN HONOR TO BE WITH THEM, TO BE ON THIS JOURNEY. THEY’RE AMAZING PEOPLE. THEY RATTLED OFF NUMBERS AND STATISTICS AND I SAID PART OF THE MOST AMAZING NUMBER IS THE 23 THAT WERE IN THIS ROOM AND THAT WERE ON THIS JOURNEY WITH US. I JUST THARNGED — THANKED THEM FOR THEIR COMMITMENT AND PRIVILEGE TO BE WITH THEM. >>YOUR FAMILY IS GOING TO BE IN THE AUDIENCE TODAY, IN THE STANDS. I KNOW THE IMPACT YOUR FOLKS HAVE HAD ON YOUR COACHING CAREER. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE THEM HERE FOR YOUR LAST GAME?>>IT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME. THEY’VE JUST BEEN TREMENDOUS. SUCH ROCKS FOR ME. TO HAVE THEM HERE IS FANTASTIC.>>CONGRATULATIONS, MY FRIEND. >>THANK YOU. >>WHAT A CAREER. CONGRATULATIONS.>>I DON’T KNOW WHO WAS MORE EMOTIONAL, JILL OR JULIE. LET’S HAVE A LOOK AT WHAT SHE DID, THOUGH. HEAD COACH THE LAST FIVE YEARS. BACK-TO-BACK WINNING WORLD CUPS. NOBODY HAS EVER DONE THAT AS A COACH. TWICE THE WORLD COACH OF THE YEAR. A ROLE OF HONOR. IT COULD BE 107 CAREER VICTORIES IF THEY WIN TODAY. DOWN ON THE PITCH NOW, SHE’S BEING SHOWERED WITH GIFTS. HER FAMILY ARE HERE. THE CROWD ARE RESPONDING. LOVELY>>Ian: COVERAGE OF U.S. SOCK SER BROUGHT TO YOU BY VOLKSWAGEN, USA AGAINST SOUTH KOREA AT SOLDIER FIELD IN CHICAGO AND VERY MUCH THE JILL ELLIS SHOW. HER FINAL GAME IN CHARGE. THIS IS HER FINAL SELECTION IN CHARGE AND SHE PICKED SEVEN OF HER WORLD CUP WINNING TEAM FROM A FEW WEEKS AGO, INCLUDING THE WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR, MEGAN RAPINOE. >>Jane: FANS LOVE TO SEE MEGAN RAPINOE BACK WHICH BRINGS ME TO THE ANALYST CORNER. ON THURSDAY NIGHT ON HER FIRST GAME BACK, WHEN SHE’S SERVING THAT BALL IN, ALI LONG ON THE END OF IT, BUT THAT ONE PERFECTLY PLACED IN AND AS I SAID, THEY HAVEN’T HAD HER SINCE THE WORLD CUP. SHE CAN PICK PLAYERS APART AND FIND THEM WIDE OPEN. DEFENDING BY SOUTH KOREA, BUT WHAT A BALL IN ON THAT GAME THURSDAY NIGHT.>>Ian: THERE’S THE SOUTH KOREAN LINEUP. TWO PLAYERS TO WATCH. BEST PLAYERS ARE NUMBER 10 AND JO — >>Jane: FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE SUMMARY WHAT THEY LINED UP AGAINST ON THURSDAY NIGHT AS WELL.>>Ian: THE FINAL GAME OF THE VICTORY TOUR, THE U.S. ARE NOW ON A ROLE OF 17 STRAIGHT WINS. SHOULD THEY MAKE THAT 18 TODAY, IT WOULD EQUAL THE RECORD ALL TIME. AND THE FLAG’S UP. TO DENY JULIE ERTZ AN EARLY OPPORTUNITY.>>Jane: LOOK AT HER SMILE. SHE’S THINKING I AM ALREADY GOING TO GET ON THE BOARD IN THE FIRST MINUTE. PUSHING VERY HIGH, JULIE ERTZ, USUALLY SITTING IN THAT HOLDING CENTRAL MIDFIELD POSITION.>>Ian: UNBEAT TEN IN THE VERY FIRST GAME OF A BUSY 2019 AWAY TO FRANCE. SOUTH KOREA IS MAKING IT TO THE WORLD CUP, BUT THEY LOST ALL THREE GAMES THERE. THEY ARE RANKED NUMBER 20 IN THE WORLD BY FIFA. 2-0 DEFEAT THE OTHER NIGHT WASN’T TOO BAD AP EFFORT FROM THEM. WE SHALL SEE HERE. NOT EXACTLY WHAT ALYSSA NAEHER WAS LOOKING FOR. TOBIN HEATH WAS OUT FOR THIS GAME WITH INJURY. THERE ARE A FEW RULED OUT INCLUDING ALEX MORGAN WHO CONTINUES TO BE TROUBLED BY A KNEE INJURY. AND IN CHARGE OF KOREA TODAY IS THE INTERIM HEAD COACH, THEY DON’T HAVE A PERMANENT MAN IN CHARGE. YOON DUKYEO WAS IN CHARGE AT THE WORLD CUP AND HE’S GONE. THERE WERE ALLEGATIONS IN THE PAST OF BULLYING AND BAD BEHAVIOR, SO HE WAS QUICKLY TAKEN OUT OF THAT JOB LEAVING THE POSITION STILL VACANT. I HEAR JILL ELLIS IS AVAILABLE FOR THAT.>>Jane: MAYBE THAT’S WHAT THEY WERE WAITING FOR.>>Ian: DOWN THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE. JUST ABOUT KEPT IN PLAY BY CARLI LLOYD. DID WELL TO GET THERE BUT COULDN’T WRAP HER FOOT AROUND IT. CARLI LLOYD BEING DEPLOYED IN MIDFIELD TODAY. MAYBE SURPRISINGLY SHE IS THE TOP SCORER FOR THE U.S. WOMEN’S TEAM IN THIS CALENDAR YEAR.>>Jane: NOT SURPRISINGLY TO ME. EVEN AT 37.>>Ian: I ONLY SAID IT BECAUSE SHE’S HAD A WHOLE LOT LESS MINUTES OUT ON THE PITCH. >>Jane: YES. >>Ian: THAN SOME OF THE OTHERS. IT WASN’T CASTING ANY DOUBTS ON HER GOAL-SCORING ABILITY, OF COURSE.>>Jane: THE COACHING SITUATION, IAN, AND THE OTHER INTERESTING THING ABOUT THAT IS JI — SHE WAS THE ASSISTANT COACH OF THE NATIONAL GAME SO THEY DON’T THINK SHE’S READY. SHE’S NOT AFRAID TO GIVE HER OPINION ON WHAT SHE THINKS WENT WRONG AT THE WORLD CUP. THEY HAD SUCH A DISAPPOINTING WORLD CUP. SHE SAID THEY PLAYED TOO CONSERVATIVE, DIDN’T GO FORWARD ENOUGH. THE TEAM NEEDED TO BE YOUNGER. THESE ARE ALL THINGS SHE’S ALREADY TRYING TO FILL WITH THIS GROUP. THEY’RE NOT GOING TO SIT BACK AGAINST THE U.S. WHEN THEY COME HERE. WE’RE GOING TO BRING A YOUNGER SQUAD. ONLY 12 FROM THE 23 PLAYER ROSTER AT THE WORLD CUP HERE IN THE UNITED STATES.>>Ian: LIM ON THE BALL, THE CENTRAL DEFENDER. THEY HAVE THEIR OWN OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS TO CONTEND WITH. BEAUTIFUL DAY HERE IN CHICAGO. STILL FEELS LIKE HIGH SUMMER. NEARLY 70 DEGREES. TRYING TO FIND TOBIN HEATH IN THE MIDDLE.>>Jane: THAT HIGH CENTRAL POSITION HAD SO MUCH SUCCESS ON THE GAME IN THURSDAY NIGHT WHEN SHE CAME IN THE SECOND HALF BREAKING FREE OF HER PACE. U.S. GOING TO BE LOOKING FER HER TO DO THE SAME TODAY.>>Ian: SHE DID A GREAT JOB IN THE WORLD CUP, PLAYED IN EVERY GAME. SAW THAT VITAL HEADER AGAINST ENGLAND IN THE SEMIFINALS. BACK IN AN OLD ROLE TODAY OF CENTRAL STRIKER, MORE NATURALLY PLAYING IN WIDE POSITIONS IN MORE RECENT TIMES. IT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE THERE WAS A DRY EYE IN THE HOUSE AT THIS MEETING BETWEEN THE PLAYERS, THE FINAL MEETING WITH JILL ELLIS AHEAD OF THE GAME. >>Jane: I KNOW. THAT’S THE THING. JILL, IT’S FINALLY HIT HER. SHE’S BEEN PRETTY CALM ABOUT IT UNTIL THIS WEEK AND THEN THIS WEEK I’VE GOT TO SPEND QUITE A LOT OF TIME WITH HER AND I THINK IT JUST STARTS TO HIT YOU. YOU START TO REFLECT, AND ESPECIALLY PEOPLE SEEING THAT SHE WAS THE HEAD COACH FOR FIVE YEARS, BUT UNDER TIA WHO WAS THE ASSISTANT COACH FOR SO LONG, IT’S BEEN SUCH A PART OF HER LIFE FOR OVER A DECADE.>>Ian: GOOD START HERE BY SOUTH KOREA. PULLS IT BACK. HAVING TO GIVE THAT AWAY. HERE’S MEGAN RAPINOE. LOOKED PRETTY EAGER AND RIGHT THERE THE SOUTH KOREAN. >>Jane: LEE YOUNGJU, TRYING FOR THE SHOT. COACHES GOING OUT IN THE TOP OF AMERICAN HISTORY. SCOTTY BOWMAN OF THE RED WINGS. BILL WALSH OF THE 49ers. IT’S THE BEST WAY TO GO, ISN’T IT? RIGHT ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN. >>Jane: I AGREE. GOOD TIMING.>>Ian: WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU’VE ONE TWO WORLD CUPS? GOOD PIECE OF PLAY. GOOD DEFENDING BY THE SOUTH KOREANS. THEY’VE GOT A LOT OF PLAYERS BACK. THEY’VE ALREADY SEEN HOW GOOD JI SOYUN IS ON THE BALL.>>Jane: WITH SOUTH KOREA, THOSE ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES THEY’RE NOT GOING TO GET THAT MANY IN THIS GAME. THEY’VE GOT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF. TO GET JI SOYUN IN A POSITION TO COUNTER. SHE HAD CHO, NUMBER 8, ON HER LEFT SIDE MAKING THAT RUN. DECIDED INSTEAD TO GO CENTRAL. BUT YOU’VE GOT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE MOMENTS.>>Ian: THEN WE’VE SEEN STRAIGHTAWAY THE SOUTH KOREA MORE OF A TEST ON THE BETTER SIDE THAN PORTUGAL WHO THE U.S. PLAYED A COUPLE OF TIMES A MONTH OR SO AGO. LOOK TO THE RIGHT THERE. A LITTLE BIT OF RELIEF THAT THEY CAN MAYBE DO SOMETHING IN THIS GAME. IT WOULD BE A SHOCK IF THEY DID. BIG SHOCK. CENTRAL DEFENDER WHO PLAYS FOR THE TEAM, BOTTOM OF THE TABLE IN SOUTH KOREA. KANG AND YONG YO — THE NORTH CAROLINA PLAYER HAS GOT CLUB BUSINESS TO ATTEND TO OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. SENT TO CARLI LLOYD. ONE OF FOUR PLAYERS WHO PLAY HERE IN CHICAGO FOR THE RED STARS. KANG ON THE BALL. IT LOOKS LIKE NUMBER 7 LEE YOUNGJU. GIVING THE BALL AWAY IN MIDFIELD AND NEARLY GETTING THEM INTO TROUBLE. LIM GOT IT AWAY. ANOTHER VERY, VERY HEALTHY LOOKING CROWD IN THERE. 49,000. OUT OF PLAY. SOME PLAYERS ARE MISSING. AMONG THEM ALI KRIEGER WHO HAS A KNEE INJURY. ALEX MORGAN AND LINDSEY HORAN WITH THE CONCUSSION PROTOCOL HAVING TO SIT THIS ONE OUT. MEGAN RAPINOE. ANOTHER SET PIECE, THE SOUTH KOREANS STRUGGLED AGAINST THESE THE OTHER NIGHT. THE GOALKEEPER STRONG AND EAGER TO GET IN THERE. >>Jane: THE CRAZY THING, TOO, IS THIS IS THE POWER OF MEGAN RAPINOE ON THOSE BALLS. THEY’RE HARD TO DEFEND. SHE WHIPS THEM IN WITH PACE. FOUR OF HER GOALS AT THE WORLD CUP CAME OFF THAT. IT WAS REALLY THEIR DOWNFALL AT THE WORLD CUP.>>Ian: PLAYED INSIDE AND ROSE LAVELLE ARRIVING. ROSE LAVELLE WHO MADE SUCH A BIG IMPRESSION AT THE WORLD CUP. THE THIRD BEST PLAYER IN THE TOURNAMENT. >>Jane: THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL BALL IN BY TOBIN HEATH WHO JUST PICKS THE POCKET, PLACES IT ON HER HEAD HELP ROSE LAVELLE GETS UNDERNEATH THAT. GOT TO GET OVER THAT ONE. THAT’S ONE OF THOSE PERFECT SITUATIONS YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO HEAD DOWN ON TO THAT GOAL LINE. >>Ian: I THINK SHE SCORED IN THE WORLD CUP FINAL. TO ME THAT’S THE ICONIC IMAGE OF THE TEAM THIS YEAR. SOLO GOALS BEAUTIFULLY TAKEN BY ROSE LAVELLE. LEE SEONJOO AGAIN. FREE KICK GOES THE WAY OF THE SOUTH KOREANS. THIS YEAR THEY’VE BEATEN ARGENTINA 5-0. SOUTH KOREA THEY DID GET BEATEN BY AUSTRALIA FOUR GOALS TO ONE. THEY’RE NOT IN THE VERY TOP TEAMS AS THE WORLD CUP SHOWED, BUT THEY ARE A TEAM WHO HAD BIG AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE. IT’S GOING TO BE HARMLESSLY OUT OF PLAY.>>Jane: AND A TEAM THAT’S YOUNG AND GROWING AND THEY KNOW IT’S NOT JUST THE OLYMPICS THEY’RE LOOKING TO. QUALIFIERS AS YOU MENTIONED IN FEBRUARY FOR THEM. BUT THAT IS THE NEXT WORLD CUP AS WELL. THAT’S WHY I THINK THAT WAS SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THOSE LOSSES BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK, ONLY SCORING ONE GOAL IN THE 2019 WORLD CUP AFTER 2015, THEM GETTING OUT OF THEIR GROOVE, GOING TO THE ROUND OF 16.>>Ian: THEY BEAT SPAIN 2-1 TWO YEARS AGO IN THE WORLD CUP AND ANOTHER POINT AGAINST COSTA RICA AS WELL. THAT WAS A BAD SHOWING FOR THEM. CASEY SHORT WINNING THE HEADER. SHE WAS VERY UNLUCKY NOT TO MAKE THE 23 WOMEN SQUAD THAT WENT TO THE WORLD CUP BECAUSE SHE HAD BEEN IN SEVERAL SQUADS BEFORE THAT, BUT IT’S THE WAY THE COOKIE CRUMBLES AND THERE’S ALWAYS GOING TO BE SOMEBODY WHO’S UNLUCKY. TOUGH LUCK FOR A FEW OTHERS AS WELL. YOU DO FEEL FOR THOSE PLAYERS. THE U.S. IN MEN’S SOCK IS SQUARING OFF IN A NATION’S LEAGUE MATCH ON ESPN 2. FROM TORONTO. SEE IF THEY CAN BEAT THE USA. QUITE FANCY THAT. THEY GET THE IMPRESSION IN THE GAME THE OTHER NIGHT — >>Ian: THERE WILL COME A POINT WHERE THESE U.S. PLAYERS HAVE TO STOP BASKING IN THE GLORY OF WHAT HAPPENED IN FRANCE AND START TO JUST GET THEIR MINDS AROUND THE NEXT BIG ASSIGNMENT. WHICH OF COURSE IS THE OLYMPIC GAMES. >>Jane: THAT’S HAPPENING TOO. >>Ian: FOUR YEARS AGO THAT WAS THE ONE BLOCK ON JILL ELLIS’S PORTFOLIO, GOING OUT TO SWEDEN IN THE QUARTERFINALS IN RIO. >>Jane: THERE’S NO WOMEN’S WORLD CUP CHAMPION WHO’S WON THE OLYMPICS NEXT YEAR EVER. THINK ABOUT THAT. IT’S SO HARD BECAUSE IT’S BACK-TO-BACK YEARS, FOR ONE THING. AND TWO, YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS. IT’S A DEMANDING SCHEDULE. THERE’S A VICTORY TOUR, SPONSOR COMMITMENTS, PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE GAMES. THESE PLAYERS BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION UNDERSTANDABLY SO ARE EXHAUSTED.>>Ian: YEAH. PLUS YOU BECOME VERY MUCH THE TEAM TO BE SHOCKED AT, THE TEAM AT THE TOP.>>Jane: THE CHALLENGE IS WHEN DO YOU GET THAT BREAK?>>Ian: A TOUCH BY CHRISTEN PRESS. JILL ELLIS, SHE DOES HAVE A VERY FINE LIFE. ANY COACH WOULD GIVE THEIR RIGHT ARM FOR. IT’S ONE THING HAVING THOSE PLAYERS. IT’S ANOTHER THING TO PICK THE RIGHT PLAYERS, DEPLOY THEM AND PRODUCE THEM FOR A BIG TOURNAMENT. SHE’S DONE THAT TWICE.>>Jane: SHE DOES HAVE SOME PERSONALITIES ON THIS TEAM. IMAGINE THE PERSONALITIES YOU HAVE TO MANAGE IN THIS GROUP. IN A GOOD WAY. >>Ian: WHATEVER CAN YOU MEAN?>>Jane: IT IS NOT EASY. THEY WANT TO PLAY. THEY WANT TO PLAY EVERY MINUTE. YOU HAVE TO WEIGH ALL THOSE THINGS. SHE’S ALSO MANAGED IT, I DON’T THINK WE GIVE HER ENOUGH CREDIT FOR, ABBY’S LAST WORLD CUP AND HAVING TO SHIFT HER ROLE AND THAT. CARLI LLOYD AND POSSIBLY HER LAST WORLD CUP AND HAVING TO SHIFT HER ROLE. IT’S NOT EASY. WE SEE A LOT OF COACHES GET THAT WRONG IN BIG MOMENTS.>>Ian: A FOOT A LITTLE BIT THERE IN MEGAN RAPINOE. THAT’S WHERE THE REFEREE STEPPED IN FOR THE FREE KICK. UNDEFEATED. THAT IS REMARKABLE. IN ALL WORLD CUP AND WORLD CUP QUALIFYING GAMES, AT THE FINALS THEMSELVES, SHE’S WON EVERY GAME. >>Jane: IT IS REMARKABLE.>>Ian: I’VE GOT TO THINK FROM A PERSONAL EXPECT, AS WE’VE TALKED TO HER QUITE A BIT, SHE’S ALWAYS BEEN FRIENDLY AND APPROACHABLE AND HELPFUL. THAT WOULDN’T BE TRUE OF EVERY COACH YOU DEAL WITH. SOMETIMES THERE WERE THINGS THAT TOOK PLACE WHEN THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF CRITICISM AROUND AS WELL. PEOPLE CAN JUST TIGHTEN UP A LITTLE BIT AND GO SILENT ON YOU.>>Jane: I REMEMBER CONVERSATIONS WITH HER IN 2017 AND 2018 WHEN THEY WERE STRUGGLING, WHEN SHE WAS GOING THROUGH THOSE DIFFERENT PHASES OF TRYING DIFFERENT FORMATIONS, DIFFERENT PLAYERS. I REMEMBER SAYING HOW IS IT GOING, YOU OKAY? SHE SAYS WHAT ARE WE DOING IF WE’RE NOT TRYING NEW THINGS IN THESE YEARS? IF WE’RE NOT PLAYING IN THE BEST IN THE WORLD, WHAT ARE WE DOING, JULIE? AND SHE’S RIGHT. SHE HAD TO TRY THOSE THINGS TO GET BETTER.>>IT’S A BOLD POLICY. THERE WERE LOTS OF REVERSES ALONG THE WAY. I REMEMBER THERE BEING BIG QUESTIONS AGAINST AUSTRALIA IN THE TOURNAMENT OF NATIONS. IT ALL CAME OUT IN THE WASH, AS THEY SAY. CARLI LLOYD WITH A FEW CHALLENGES. IT’S HARDLY A SENTIMENTAL OFF THE PITCH. >>Julie: YOU CAN SEE THE SOUTH KOREAN TEAM PLAYING WITH A DIFFERENT ENERGY THAN THEY DID AT THE WORLD CUP. SO MUCH MORE CONSERVATIVE AT THE WORLD CUP. THIS IS A TEAM THAT HAS DECIDED THEY ARE NOT GOING TO SIT BACK ON THE U.S., WHICH CAN BE A RISKY ADVENTURE WHEN YOU DO THAT AT TIMES. RIGHTS NOW THEY’RE DOING IT QUITE WELL. THE U.S. HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING OUT OF THEIR FINAL THIRD WHEN THEY DO PRESS.>>THEY PUT A LOT OF PRESSURE QUITE HIGH ON THE PITCH. AND THEN SOME LAYING IT WIDE. AND THEN JULIA, ONE OF THE CHICAGO RED STAR PLAYERS IN BETWEEN HERE. WEARING THE CAPTAIN’S ARM BAND. THEY’VE CHANGED CAPTAIN. NOW THEY WANT A PLAY WHERE IS BASED IN SOUTH KOREA. HALF OF THESE TEAM PLAYERS WITH THE REIGNING CHAMPION. A PLAY AGAIN BY THE SOUTH KOREANS. VERY USED TO JAPAN RULING THE ROOST IN MUCH OF THE ASIAN TEAMS, AREN’T WE? WOMEN’S RESULTS. THERE’S JEONG. THIS STADIUM HAS CHANGED A LOT SINCE I 50 CAME HERE. THAT WAS THE 1994 WORLD CUP PLAYING FOR BULGARIA. THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE.>>Julie: THE COLUMNS, THE CURVES. SO PRETTY. ONE OF MY FAVORITE STADIUMS. I ACTUALLY HAD A MOMENT WHEN I WAS WALKING IN TODAY BECAUSE I WAS WALKING DOWN THE LOADING DOCK AND IT REMINDED ME WHEN WE DROVE IN FOR THE ’99 WORLD CUP. >>Ian: A GOOD BIT OF PLAY AND THEY’VE GOT SOME DEFENDING TO DO HERE TODAY DOWN IN THE END. NAEHER DOING WELL. SHE WAS FREE FOR A MOMENT. THE SOUTH KOREANS HAVE A CHANCE TO GO AHEAD IF THEY GET IT RIGHT, AND THEY COULDN’T. A BIG CHANCE. TELL YOU WHAT, THE U.S. HAS TO WAKE UP THEIR IDEAS HERE A LITTLE OR THEY COULD BE IN TROUBLE IN THIS GAME. >>Julie: I THINK THAT’S OFFSIDE. WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT IT AGAIN. STILL THERE’S THE GOOP WITH THE U.S. YOU CAN SEE IN THE U.S., THEY HAVE TIRED LEGS. WE WERE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE, IAN. COVERAGE BROUGHT TO YOU BY VOLKSWAGEN. PRESENTING SPONSOR U.S. SOCCER. LET’S ALL DRIVE SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES. I DO THINK THIS IS QUITE THE TOUGH GAME MENTALLY FOR THE U.S. PLAYERS WHO MAY BE JUST FEELING THIS IS THE END OF A LONG CYCLE OF GAMES AT THE END OF WHAT’S BEEN A DEMANDING YEAR.>>Julie: YOU CAN SEE THERE WAS A BIG SIGH. SHE KNOWS IT TOO. I’M JUST TRYING TO GET ENOUGH HEALTHY PLAYERS TO ROTATE AND KEEP THEM OKAY FOR THE PLAYOFFS AS WELL. MANAGING MINUTES AS WELL. BUT I’LL TELL YOU, IF SOUTH KOREA CAN GET NUMBER TEN JI SOYUN ON THAT BALL, SHE HAD THE LOVELY THREADING PASS IN. SHE’S NUMBER 10. IF JI CAN GET A LOT OF THE BALL, THIS SOUTH KOREAN TEAM STARTS TO CLICK.>>Ian: THEY’RE IN QUITE AN AMBITIOUS FORMATION HERE. THERE’S FOUR ATTACKING PLAYERS, THREE JUST BEHIND THE STRIKE. THEY MIGHT BE COMING HERE WITH CARLI LLOYD. MEGAN RAPINOE WITH THE CROSS. THIS GOES UP. THE SOUTH KOREANS WON IT. KEPT IT ALIVE. HERE SHE IS AGAIN, JI SOYUN. THAT WAS A FOUL BY THE MIDFIELD PLAYER. SHORT BALL AND THE DEFENDER GETS IT UP.>>Julie: HERE’S THE KOREAN CHANCE AT THE OTHER END. JI SOYUN ON THE BALL. LET’S SEE IF THIS ONE IS OFF.>>Ian: I THINK SO.>>Julie: CLOSE. >>Ian: THERE IS NO VAR IN OPERATION HERE. IT WAS NOT NEEDED THERE ANYWAY UNLESS IT RESULTED IN A GOAL. WHO SAYS VAR WOULD END ALL THE CONTROVERSIES. IT HAS A WHOLE LOT OF DIFFERENT ONES. THE U.S. HAVE SCORED IN THEIR LAST 48 MATCHES. INDEED THEY SCORED TWO OR MORE IN THE LAST 16 GAMES, BUT NONE SO FAR IN THE OPENING 23 MINUTES HERE. THIS MIGHT BE THE TOUGHEST GAME THEY’VE HAD ON THIS VICTORY TOUR. GREAT BALL THERE. NOT QUITE TOGETHER WITH THE FIRST TOUCH SHE WAS LOOKING FOR. LEE YOUNGJU. JUST A SWITCH FROM LEFT CENTER BACK TO RIGHT CENTER BACK. ABBY DAHLKEMPER USUALLY PLAYS THERE AND SHE’S MISSING. SHE’S BETTER ON THE LEFT. LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT CAN JUST MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE BALANCE OF THE DEFENSE. THE DEFENSE HAS PERFORMED VERY WELL SINCE THE WORLD CUP. ERTZ HERE. NOW TOBIN HEATH. IT’S HIT THE POST! WIDE OF THE POST. A DRAINED ATTACK.>>Julie: SECOND POST FOR JULIE ERTZ IN TWO GAMES. SAME THING HAPPENED TO HER IN THE SOUTH KOREAN GAME. THIS WAS SUCH A FORCED SEQUENCE BY THE UNITED STATES. AND GETTING A BY AT IT. IT STRUCK SO WELL. YOU CAN SEE THAT BALL BARELY SPINNING. SHE JUST STRIKES THE SWEET-SPOT. UNLUCKY THERE. CRYSTAL DUNN ON THE OTHER SIDE WAS NOT MUCH OF AN ANGLE, BUT IT ALL STARTED WITH ROSE LAVELLE IN THE MIDFIELD AS WE SAW HER DO SO WELL IN THE WORLD CUP JUST MANAGING THE SPACE. >>JULIE ERTZ HAS GOT A KNOCK TO THE FACE THERE. LOOKED INADVERTENT. CRYSTAL DUNN IS NEARLY ON COURSE FOR HER FIRST GOAL FOR THE USA, THIS YEAR FOR HER CLASS. SHE HAS SEVEN PLUS GOALS FOR THE CURRENT. OKAY.>>Julie: YOU CAN SEE THIS ONE HERE AS SHE’S BACKING UP.>>Ian: CHO. AND A FEW FREE KICKS. THIS IS A SIGN OF HOW WELL CONTESTED IT IS SO FAR. THEY’VE NOT READ THE SCRIPT, HAVE THEY? THE SOUTH KOREANS?>>Julie: DID YOU NOT KNOW WHAT THIS GAME IS ABOUT? DO YOU REMEMBER ABBY’S FINAL GAME AS WELL?>>Ian: ABSOLUTELY. I’M SURE THEIR INTERIM COACH SAID WE’VE GOT A CHANCE TO MAKE A BIT OF A NAME FOR OURSELVES AND GET OURSELVES READY FOR THE OLYMPIC QUALIFYING. SHE GOT A LITTLE KICK AS WELL THERE. LOOKS LIKE SHE ACTUALLY STEPPED ON THAT. WE’LL SEE A REPLAY. HAVE A LOOK.>>Julie: THERE IT IS. RIGHT ON THE ANKLE. OUCH.>>Ian: CHO IS WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT. I’M NOT GOING TO SAY IT WAS DELIBERATE, BUT OPPONENTS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO LEAVE SOMETHING THERE. >>Julie: YOU KNOW THAT’S MY ONLY RED CARD? BECAUSE A BRAZILIAN DID THAT TO ME AND I KICKED HER OFF ME AND I WAS THE ONE WHO GOT CAUGHT. NEVER RETALIATE. IT HURTS SO BAD RIGHT THERE.>>Ian: LET THAT BE A LESSON.>>Julie: DO NOT KICKBACK, KIDS. IT’S QUITE HARD IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT. PLAY IS GOING TO BE STOPPED FOR AN INJURY. SHE HAD THAT BIG CHANCE EARLIER IN THE GAME. SHE’S GOING TO NEED A LITTLE BIT OF TREATMENT HERE. CASEY SHORT WITH THE CHALLENGE. WE HAVE AN INTERESTING LINE ON CASEY SHORT. SHE’S BEEN IN THE LEAGUE TEAM OF THE MONTH EVERY SEASON. >>Julie: ISN’T THAT AMAZING? IT’S A GREAT STEP. THANK YOU, JAY COOPER. SAYING EVERY SINGLE MONTH, THE ONLY PLAYER IN THE NWSL THAT’S BEEN CONSISTENTLY THERE, CASEY SHORT.>>Ian: NEEDING FURTHER TREATMENT. WELL, A FULL SEASON AVAILABLE NOW. >>Julie: OH, YES.>>Ian: LAUGHTER PERMITTED PODCAST. >>Julie: IT’S HAPPENING. >>Ian: SEASON TWO COMING UP. YOU’VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF INTERVIEWS FOR THIS THIS WEEK, HAVEN’T YOU?>>Julie: YES. WE HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE SAY WHY AREN’T YOU GETTING MORE OF THE NATIONAL TEAM? OKAY, WE’LL GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT. WE’RE GOING TO DO A SURPRISE BONUS WEEK OF JUST WORLD CUP CHAMPS AND THAT’S NEXT WEEK, OCTOBER 14th. WE GOT JULIE ERTZ AND CRYSTAL DUNN TOGETHER. SUPER FUN. WE DID THEM IN PAIR, MOST OF US. WE GOT JILL ELLIS, OF COURSE, ON HER OWN. WE GOT KELLY O’HARA AND ALEX MORGAN TOGETHER. WE GOT ROSE LAVELLE AND SAM TOGETHER. WE GOT CARLI LLOYD TALKING SUPER FAST. I TALKED TO HER. WE TAPED FOUR OF THEM YESTERDAY. I SAT DOWN WITH HER YESTERDAY TALKING ABOUT THE WHOLE WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE. SO IT WAS FUN. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. >>Ian: YOU’VE GOT BILLIE JEAN KING COMING UP AS WELL. >>Julie: SHE’S ACTUALLY GOING TO LAUNCH SEASON TWO. >>Ian: I HEAR THE INTERVIEW WITH CARLI LLOYD IS QUITE FASCINATING. >>Julie: IT WAS. SHE’S ALSO FASCINATING. IT’S FUN TO PICK THAT BRAIN. >>Ian: MY QUESTION IS WOULD SHE WANT TO CARRY ON BEING A SUB AT THE OLYMPICS NEXT YEAR?>>Julie: I THINK I CONSUMED ABOUT 400 DOUGHNUTS YESTERDAY, BECAUSE WE ALWAYS DO HAVE THEM THERE. >>Ian: TRYING TO FIND A WAY THROUGH. IT LOOKED LIKE A FOUL PLAY, FRANKLY. THEY’RE NOT TOO WORRIED ABOUT IT. A STRAY ARM AND THIS TIME TOBIN HEATH IS THE ONE NEEDING TREATMENT. SOUTH KOREA YOU CAN TELL THEIR ATTITUDE IN THIS GAME, THEY WANT TO GET SOME KIND OF RESULT OUT OF THIS TO TAKE HOME WITH THEM. >>Julie: YOU KNOW WHAT’S INTERESTING? SOME COMMENTS FROM THE PLAYERS AFTER THE FIRST GAME, WE THOUGHT WE PLAYED WELL IN THAT GAME. A 2-0 LOSS TO THE UNITED STATES, BUT THE LAST TIME WE CAME TO THE UNITED STATES, OUR SECOND GAME AGAINST THEM WE LOST 6-0. THEY SAID WE DO NOT WANT TO REPEAT THAT PERFORMANCE AGAIN IN OUR SECOND GAME. YOU CAN SEE THERE IS SPICE FROM THEM TESTIMONY. >>Ian: IF THEY CAN MAINTAIN THAT KIND OF PACE AND INTENSITY WILL BE A QUESTION I’D SAY. MEGAN RAPINOE HAS BECOME A BIT OF A GLOBAL SUPERSTAR OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS. AND SHE TAKES THE FREE KICK. WE’LL GET A FREE KICK THERE. >>Julie: I CAN TELL YOU ONE THING, THE INTERIM HEAD COACH OF SOUTH KOREA SAID ALSO AFTER THE GAME THIS TEAM CLEARLY STILL NEEDS TO GET BETTER ONSET PACES. HERE MARKING IS A LITTLE BETTER.>>Ian: IT WAS A FREE KICK ALL RIGHT.>>Julie: THEY TIGHTENED UP ON THOSE SET PIECES. WE SAW FOUR OUT OF EIGHT OF THEIR GOALS IN THE WORLD CUP CAME OFF SET PIECES. TWO AGAINST THE UNITED STATES. BOTH THE U.S. GOALS ONSET PIECES ON THURSDAY NIGHT.>>Ian: FREE KICK. SONNETT IS OKAY. SOUTH KOREA AND THAT’S THE U.S. AS THEY GO BEHIND IN JILL ELLIS’S FINAL GAME AND MAYBE THAT HAD BEEN COMING. SILENCE IS DEAFENING IN CHICAGO.>>Julie: LEE, YOU GIVE HER A LITTLE BIT OF SPACE. WE’VE SEEN HER DO THIS SO MANY TIMES AT CHELSEA AS WELL. SHE JUST PICKS THOSE POCKETS. AND IN TRAFFIC, THAT IS SUCH A HARD ONE FOR ALYSSA NAEHER TO GET TO WITH THAT QUICK RELEASE. PLACES IT PERFECTLY IN THE CORNER. WHAT A GOAL BY JI SOYUN.>>Ian: THE SOUTH KOREAN RECORD SCORER ALL TIME. THAT WAS THE 55th TIME SHE SCORED FOR HER COUNTRY. IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE PLACEMENT REALLY.>>Julie: WE’VE GOT A GAME ON OUR HANDS.>>Ian: YES. AS I THINK I SAID EARLIER IN THE YEAR, LEE YOUNGJU. ROSE LAVELLE IS THE PLAYER DOWN INJURED. AND THAT’S WHY THE YELLOW CARD HAS BEEN ADMINISTERED.>>Julie: YOU CAN SEE THAT LEFT ANKLE TURNOVER THERE. WOW. >>Ian: THAT WAS ON THE RECKLESS SIDE, THAT CHALLENGE, SO I THINK THE YELLOW CARD IS COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED. SHE’S STRUGGLING A BIT, ISN’T SHE THERE ROSE LAVELLE. NOT MOVING THAT EASILY AT ALL. MAYBE OUGHT TO RUN IT OFF.>>Julie: AT THE VERY END OF THAT TACKLE, LOOK AT THIS ONE. AT THE VERY END, WATCH THAT LEFT ANKLE. >>Ian: COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE, ACTUALLY. AND THE GOALKEEPER AND DEFENSE DID SOME GREAT WORK BETWEEN THEM THERE.>>Julie: WHAT A SAVE BY KANG. CRYSTAL DUNN AGAINST SET PIECES, FOUR MARKING BY SOUTH KOREA. KANG TO THE RESCUE THERE. SORRY, IT WAS THE DEFENDER WHO GOT A FOOT IN.>>Ian: COMING OUT ON THE GROUND MAKES IT A BIT MORE DIFFICULT. CARLI LLOYD! 1-1! TAKES THE HEADER. 1-1.>>Julie: LOOK AT THAT BALL ON THE BACK POST AGAIN. CARLI LLOYD, SUCH GOOD TECHNIQUE. ONE MORE AND YOU CAN SEE THAT DEFENDER GOES UP WITH HER, BUT WHAT A GREAT HEADER THAT IS. BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM. THE KEEPER SHIFTING. NOT AN EASY GOAL BY ANY STRETCH. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE SEEN HER DO THAT?>>Ian: JUST ANOTHER GOAL FROM MEGAN RAPINOE SET PIECE. THAT WILL BE THE 62nd ASSIST IN THE CAREER OF MEGAN RAPINOE. THE FIFTH MOST ALL TIME AMONG THE U.S. WOMEN’S TEAM. ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE THERE. >>Julie: JUST WATCHING ROSE LAVELLE AFTER THAT TACKLE, BECAUSE SHE’S NOT CUTTING WELL OFF THAT LEFT ANKLE WHICH COMES AS NO SURPRISE.>>Ian: THAT’S A NASTY ONE FOR CERTAIN. CUT BALL AGAIN, AND AGAIN! THAT IS A RECORD FOR THE USA. THAT IS PROBABLY AN EASIER JOB THAN THE ONE SHE PUT AWAY.>>Julie: KOREA IS KNOWN AS BEING SO GOOD IN THOSE TIGHT LITTLE SPACES. THAT TOUCH GETS AWAY AND FALLS TO JI SOYUN. QUICK RELEASE IN FANTASTIC. GOOD SAVE BY ALYSSA NAEHER. TRYING TO GET AHOLD OF THIS GAME.>>Ian: IT’S A FEISTY GAME, ALL RIGHT. NOT QUITE WHAT WE WERE EXPECTING TO SEE HERE TODAY. WE THOUGHT THIS MIGHT JUST HAVE A BIT OF A FESTIVAL PARTY FEEL FOR THE LAST GAME FOR JILL ELLIS, ROUTINE WIN. NO, NOT AT ALL. HERE SHE IS AGAIN. SHE’S RUN THE GAME, JI SOYUN. TAKING ON CRYSTAL DUNN ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE. 21 YEARS OF AGE. HERE IS THE CHANCE FOR THE U.S. TO BREAK. PLAYING QUITE A LONG WAY AWAY FROM THE PLAYERS BEHIND IT. IT IS NOT IDEALLY. >>Julie: NO. AND THAT’S PART OF THE CHALLENGE WITH THAT SPACING BETWEEN MIDFIELD AND THAT FRONT LINE. YOU NEED AS YOU CALL ON SOUTH KOREA ON THE OTHER SIDE, YOU NEED THOSE TIGHT CONNECT TIFF PASSES TO BREAK THEM DOWN SOMETIMES.>>Ian: LAVELLE TRYING TO RUN THAT OFF. IT’S GOING TO BE A FREE KICK. AN EQUALIZING GOAL. JUST LIKE YOU SAID, BACK ACROSS THE GOALKEEPER.>>Julie: AND THE GOALKEEPER IS SHIFTING SO IT’S SO HARD. IT’S NOT EASY TO DO TO KEEP THAT LOW WITH THE DEFENDER RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. >>Ian: BEHIND TIFFANY ON THAT NUMBER 5. THE ONLY THING I’D SAY ABOUT THAT COOL FROM THE SOUTH KOREANS POINT OF VIEW, IF THEY’D HAD ANYBODY GUARDING THE POST, THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THAT OUT. >>Julie: I’VE ALWAYS BEEN AN ADVOCATE — I ALWAYS SAY THAT. I GO BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL WAY OF PUTTING TWO POST PLAYERS IN, MAKE THE GOAL SMALLER. THEY WOULD HAVE CLEARED THAT OFF THE LINE. I THINK LILLY IN 1999, HER PLAYING THAT ROLE THAT SAVED THE ENTIRE WORLD CUP FOR US.>>Ian: I GUESS THINGS GO IN AND OUT OF FASHION. >>Julie: THEY TALK ABOUT WHEN YOU’RE CLEAR IN THE BOX. YOU’RE KEEPING A LARGER FIELD IN PLAY WITH THOSE TWO COMING OUT LATE, BUT I WOULD PREFER TO.>>Ian: TIERNA DAVIDSON, ONE OF THE YOUNGER PLAYERS, JUST 21. LEE WITH THE BALL AROUND THE CORNER. A LITTLE BIT HURRIED. BIG DAY. DECISION DAY IN MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER WITH THE EMPHASIS VERY MUCH ON THE GAME BETWEEN THE TIMBERS AND THE SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES. KICKS OFF AROUND 4:00 P.M. EASTERN. THAT GAME IS ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL ABOUT WHICH ONE OF THOSE TWO WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. AND A CHANCE IN THE WEST AS WELL DEPENDING ON RESULTS. AND ALL THE GOALS AS THEY GO IN OUR WHIPAROUND SHOW ON ESPN PLUS. MLS DECISION DAY PRESENTED BY AT&T. IT COULD BE A QUELLING AFTERNOON. WE CAN JUST SEE DALLAS AND COLORADO RAPIDS FOR IT FELL THEIR WAY THIS WEEKEND AS WELL.>>Julie: THE U.S. HAVING A HECK OF A TIME AS WELL. STILL IN THAT HIGH POSITION.>>Jane: THIS IS A LITTLE MAKE DO OF MEN ABOUT IT WITH THIS GAME SO FAR. IT’S SLENDER EVIDENCE FROM WHAT WE’RE SEEING OF SOUTH KOREA HERE, THEY’D HAVE A VERY GOOD CHANCE OF CLAIMING ONE OF THE TWO PLACES BECAUSE JAPAN ARE BEING GIVEN ONE. >>Julie: TWO ASIAN SPOTS. >>Ian: THEY’D CERTAINLY BE IN THE RUNNING. OBVIOUSLY THIS TEAM IS PERFORMING BETTER THAN THEY DID AT THE WORLD CUP. GET SOME NEW BLOOD IN THERE. RAPINOE GETS THE BALL. A CHEER FROM WHAT IS ANOTHER BIG CROWD HERE AT SOLDIER FIELD. DAVIDSON.>>Julie: I THINK THE BIG POINT WILL BE CAN KOREA SUSTAIN THIS STRETCH IN THE SECOND HALF? YOUR POINT EARLIER, IT TAKES A LOT OF ENERGY WITH THE WAY THEY’RE PRESSING.>>Ian: WE’VE GOT A GAME ON OUR HANDS HERE. MERELY A FORMALITY. ALL OF THAT AND IT’S A BETTER WATCH REALLY. DIFFERENT TYPE OF OCCASION. A MISCUE. SHE WANTS A GOAL TODAY. KEEPS GETTING INTO THE PENALTY AREA, DOESN’T SHE?>>Julie: I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY THE SAME THING.>>Ian: SHE’S NEARLY GOT ONE AS WELL. RAPINOE EARLY. REALLY GOOD DROP BACK FROM MEGAN RAPINOE. AT HALFTIME WE’LL DISCUSS A FEW OF THE CURRENT HOT TOPICS. HAVE A LOOK AT THE MLS DECISION DAY. AND THE FIRST GOAL GIVEN UP BY THE U.S. SINCE APRIL HERE AGAINST SOUTH KOREA. WE’LL GET JULIE’S IDEA ABOUT WHO MIGHT BE THE COACH TO REPLACE JILL ELLIS. >>Julie: YOU’RE ON A ROLE HERE TODAY WITH YOUR IDEAS. >>Ian: I CAN ALMOST HARDLY WAIT. ALMOST. WITH HALFTIME APPROACHING, U.S. 1, SOUTH KOREA 1. VERY RARE FOR THAT U.S. TEAM TO BE GIVING A GOAL EVEN. THAT IS THE HALFTIME SCORE, 1-1. GETTING THE GOALS, JI SOYUN WITH THAT VERY WELL TAKEN GOAL FOR SOUTH KOREA. THEY DESERVED IT AS WELL. VERY COMPETITIVE IN THE FIRST HALF. JILL ELLIS MIGHT HAVE ONE GOOD HALFTIME TEAM TALK STILL TO DO HERE. CARLI LLOYD EQUALIZES 1-1. WE’LL BE BACK WITH YOU IN JUST A MOMENT HERE FROM SOLDIER FIELD IN CHICAGO WHERE EVERYBODY’S ENJOYING THEMSELVES, INCLUDING SOUTH KOREA SO FAR.>>Ian: WELCOME BACK TO THE VENUE OF CHICAGO WHERE THE U.S. WOMEN’S TEAM HAVE NEVER LOST. THEY BEAT NIGERIA 7-1 HERE IN THE 1999 WORLD CUP ON THEIR WAY TO VICTORY. DECISION DAY IN MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER TODAY. OUR FEATURED GAME WILL BE FALLING TIMBERS AGAINST SAN JOSE EARTH WAKES. 4:00 EASTERN TIME. THE WHIPAROUND SHOW WITH THE GOALS FROM EVERY ELSE WILL BE ON ESPN PLUS. SYNCHRONIZED KICK OFFS ON THIS BIG DAY FOR MLS ALL PRESENTED BY AT&T. OF COURSE IN THE WEST THAT’S WHERE MOST OF THE INTEREST LIES REALLY. THAT PORTLAND GAME AGAINST SAN JOSE IS BIG. COLORADO RAPIDS COULD MAKE IT AND SO, TOO, COULD DALLAS DEPENDING HOW THE RESULTS FALL TODAY. ALL THE QUALIFIER HAVE BEEN DECIDED FROM THE EAST. WHAT WE DON’T KNOW IS THE FINAL STANDINGS WHICH WILL, OF COURSE, INFLUENCE WHO GETS HOME ADVANTAGE WHEN THE PLAYOFFS START. SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FORMAT FOR THE EARLY STAGES OF THE PLAYOFFS BEING JUST SINGLE MATCHES. STILL PLENTY TO PLAY FOR ALL OVER THE COUNTRY TODAY AND THERE WILL BE ONE OR TWO TWISTS AND TURNS ALONG THE WAY, THAT’S FOR CERTAIN. USA ARE GOING TO MAKE THREE CHANGES STRAIGHTAWAY AT HALFTIME. MALLORY PUGH IS GOING TO COME ON, THE 21-YEAR-OLD WASHINGTON SPIRIT PLAYER. SHE’S GOT SIX GOALS THIS YEAR. MORGAN BRIAN TO PLAY MIDFIELD AND ABBY DAHLKEMPER TO STRENGTHEN THE DEFENSE. COMING OFF, MEGAN RAPINOE, ROSE LAVELLE AND CRYSTAL DUNN. I THINK JILL ELLIS’S TEAM TUK R TALK MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BIT MORE BUSINESSLIKE THAN ALL THE NICETIES AND CAREFUL TALKS PREMATCH GOING INTO THIS. >>Julie: ESPECIALLY WITH THESE VICTORY TOURS. THERE’S NOT MUCH COACHING THAT TYPICALLY HAPPENS. I’M GOING TO SAY AND GUESS THAT YOU’RE RIGHT. SUDDENLY SHE PUT BACK IN LET’S GO.>>Ian: A PROPER FAREWELL. THERE ARE LOTS OF FOULS IN THAT ALL TOLD. A COUPLE YELLOW CARDS AS WELL FOR THE SOUTH KOREAN TEAM.>>Julie: AND WITH DAHLKEMPER COMING BACK IN IN A DAY THAT’S BEEN MOVING OUT TO THE LEFT SIDE WHERE DUNN WAS.>>Ian: I THINK THAT LOOKS A BIT MORE SOLID. IT’S THE USUAL WORLD CUP FINAL CENTRAL DEFENSE’S PAIRING IN THERE NOW. GOES TO THE LEFT OUTSIDE. JI SOYUN THERE AGAIN. THE BEST PLAYER ON THE PITCH. FRESH ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE. DRIVING INTO THE BOX IS BE CAREFUL WITH THE CHALLENGE THERE. COULD IT GET IN THE WAY OF A PENALTY KICK. ? GET THEIR FIRST AND GET IT AWAY FROM CHO. OF COURSE, SOUTH KOREA HAD QUALIFIED, THE MEN’S TEAM, FOR THE LAST NINE WORLD CUPS. ONLY BRAZIL, GERMANY, ARGENTINA AND SPAIN CAN MATCH THAT. AND THE SEMIS UNDER WHO’S HITTING AS WELL WHEN THEY HOST IN 2002. ONE OR TWO CONTENTIOUS DECISIONS IN THAT WORLD CUP. THEN THERE ALWAYS ARE. CHO PLAYED FOR WEST HAM UNITED, THE OLDEST PLAYER IN THIS TEAM AT 31. WINNING HER 126th CAP. BEEN CAPTAIN OF THE TEAM IN THE LAST TWO WORLD CUP’S. >>Julie: SOUTH KOREA TAKING A BIG OFFENSIVE SHAPE. THEY’RE GOING INTO A THREE FIVE TWO AS THEY’RE BUILDING. CLEARLY WILLING TO TAKE MORE RISKS. AND AS WE SAID EARLIER, THE INTERIM COACH POINTED OUT SHE THOUGHT THE TEAM AT THE WORLD CUP FAR TOO CONSERVATIVE. ONLY SCORED ONE GOAL. SAT BACK TOO MUCH. THIS WASN’T GOING TO BE THE TEAM OF THE FUTURE.>>Julie: BEAUTIFUL STAND BY. BEEN COVERING BEHIND. SHOT THROUGH THAT. SOMEHOW SHE GOES OVER AND LOOKS AT THE REFEREE. NOT INTERESTED. SENT FLYING. THE REFEREE WAS VERY CLOSE AND SAID OKAY BY ME. 1-1. USA HAVEN’T LOST AT HOME. AUSTRALIA BEAT THEM OVER TWO YEARS AGO. 2017. REMEMBER, THERE’S ONLY BEEN SEVEN DEFEATS IN THE WHOLE JILL ELLIS’S FIVE YEAR REIGN. THREE OF THEM AGAINST FRANCE, BY THE WAY, BUT NOT TO THE WORLD CUP THIS YEAR.>>Julie: WHEN WE WERE TALKING ON THE PODCAST, THEY SAID I REMEMBER EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. THERE WERE ONLY SEVEN.>>Ian: LLOYD PICKS THE BALL. THAT WAS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY. OCTOBER AND THE CROWD ARE IN SHORT SLEEVES HERE IN CHICAGO. IT MIGHT NOT BE THAT WARM FOR THAT MUCH LONGER.>>Julie: LOOK AT THAT, IAN. SURPASSED TONY’S MOST WINS IN TEAM HISTORY. ACTUALLY, ANTHONY DECHICO, THE SON OF THE LATE, GREAT TONY DECHICO, WAS AT THE GAME. JILL REALLY WANTED THE FAMILY TO BE A PART OF THAT. THEY SPOKE AND ANTHONY ACTUALLY, I SAW HIM AFTER THE GAME, SAID IT WAS LOVELY TO SEE HER. SHE SAID HOW MUCH TONY HAD A HAND IN THIS CURRENT TEAM. >>Ian: GOOD DEEP CROSS. THE SOUTH KOREAN DEFENDING IS QUITE CONVINCING. A BIT OF COMPOSURE BACK THERE. ONE OF TWO SEEMS TO HAVE SEEN PLAYING THE U.S. DEFENSE QUITE EASILY OVERCOME. NOTICEABLY THAILAND WHO LEADS THEM 13-0 IN THE WORLD CUP. THE U.S. GOT A LOT OF CRITICISM AFTER THAT GAME FOR CELEBRATING TOO HARD. I NEVER COULD UNDERSTAND THAT, FRANKLY. CAN’T WIN SOMETIMES. JILL ELLIS HAS COACHED AGAINST 39 DIFFERENT OPPONENTS AND BEAT 38 OF THEM AT LEAST ONCE. THE ONLY EXCEPTION, ICELAND. ICELAND.>>Julie: I WOULD NOT HAVE PREDICTED THAT. >>Ian: I DIDN’T KNOW THAT. IT WAS SENT TO ME BY U.S. SOCCER. JI SOYUN. GOOD BALL. KNOWS WHERE THE SPACE IS TO BE IN THAT POSITION TO PLAY QUITE CLEVERLEY. NUMBER 10, THE ONE WHO SCORED THE GOAL, JI SOYUN, THEY REALLY DO HAVE A TALENTED PLAYER. >>Julie: 28 YEARS OLD.>>Ian: WHO KNOWS, MAYBE HER CHANCE TO PLAY AT A WORLD CUP WILL COME IN FOUR YEARS TIME. SHE WILL BE 33 BY THEN. CAN’T RULE OUT THAT. NOT THESE DAYS. MALLORY PUGH AND PARK COLLAPSES IN A HEAT. THE MIDFIELD PLAYER. >>Julie: MALLORY PUGH SAYING SHE CAME DOWN. >>Ian: SHE DID. OTHERWISE MALLORY PUGH MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE THERE. PAINFUL, THAT’S FOR CERTAIN. BOOT IN THE FACE.>>Julie: TYPICALLY IN A GAME LIKE THIS, I WOULD SAY THE U.S. HAS GOT TO STOP PUTTING THEM UNDER PRESSURE. EVERYONE HAS BEEN DROPPING THE DEFENSE. THEY NEED TO START PRESSING. THEY NEED TO STEP THEIR LINES. THEY NEED TO PRESS HIGHER. I’M NOT SURE THE U.S. HAS THE LEGS TO DO THAT HONESTLY RIGHT NOW.>>Ian: THEIR ENERGY LEVELS ARE LOW AT THE MOMENT. THAT’S UNDERSTANDABLE. BUT IT’S PART OF THE DNA OF THIS TEAM THE WAY THEY’VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL. THEY DON’T WANT TO LOSE EVEN IF IT’S A FRIENDLY GAME LIKE THIS. THERE’S NOTHING REALLY RIDING ON IT BUT PRIDE. THEY ALMOST FORGOT ANY TEAM THAT COMES TO THEM AND MAKES AN ARGUMENT. AN AFFRONT ALMOST. QUITE A GOOD ATTITUDE. BROUGHT TO YOU BY VOLKSWAGEN, A SPONSOR OF U.S. SOCCER. LET’S ALL DRIVE SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES. CARLI LLOYD. THIS PROGRESSED TO MIDFIELD UNFAIRLY. OFTEN SEE CARLI LLOYD PLAYING AS A CENTRAL STRIKER MORE RECENTLY BACK ON OUR OLD BEAT IN MIDFIELD TODAY. IT’S HARDER IN THERE, ISN’T IT? A FEW MORE MILES TO COVER MAYBE.>>Julie: IT IS VERY HARD IN THERE.>>Ian: MORGAN BRIAN TUCKING THIS ONE BACK. TOBIN HEATH LOOKING TO SHIFT TO LLOYD. WOULDN’T QUITE DROP FOR IT. THOUGHT ABOUT BENDING. NO CENTER OF GRAVITY. SHE TURNS AND TWISTS.>>Julie:. >>Ian: A GOOD RECORD PLAYING FOR A — NUMBER 10 BEHIND THE STRIKER. WINS IT BACK AGAIN. THAT’S A GREAT BALL AS WELL. WAITING IN THE MIDDLE. ANY KIND OF CROSS FROM THE U.S. COULD BE IN TROUBLE THERE.>>Julie: IN KOREA, SOUTH KOREANS PUNISHING THE UNITED STATES FOR SOME POOR TOUCHES. CASEY SHORT, THAT FIRST TOUCH COMES UP ON HER. WE’VE SEEN THAT HAPPEN QUITE A BIT HERE.>>Ian: CONFIRMATION OF THE TWO GOALS, THREE MINUTES APART. UP TO THE HALF HOUR MARK IN THIS GAME. 1-1. NO QUESTION THAT THE REST OF THE WORLD WILL CATCH UP. BUT THE BOTTOM LINE OF THE WORLD CUP WAS THAT THEY HAVEN’T CAUGHT UP YET. THE COACHING LEVELS, THE FITNESS LEVELS ARE IMPROVING. MORE COUNTRIES ARE INVESTING MORE MONEY IN THE GAME. IT’S GOING TO GET BIGGER AND BIGGER AND BIGGER. JULIE ERTZ. PUSHED AWAY, BUT GOAL KICK SAYS THE REFEREE. >>Julie: TO YOUR POINT, IAN, WE DID THE NUMBERS FOR KOREA ON HOW MANY REGISTERED PLAYERS AND WHAT WE FOUND WAS ABOUT 5,000 REGISTERED GIRLS IN SOUTH KOREA. THINK ABOUT THAT NUMBER. 5,000. >>Ian: IN QUITE THE POPULIST COUNTRY. THEY DIDN’T HAVE A THEME UNTIL 1990. THEY DIDN’T HAVE A FEDERATION UNTIL 2001.>>Julie: AND GET WITH 5,000 PLAYERS, YOU CAN STILL PRODUCE — IMAGINE IF THEY BUILT IT FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. >>Ian: TOBIN HEATH HAS PLAYED HER LAST FEW MINUTES AND JULIE ERTZ AS WELL FOR JILL ELLIS. BIG HUGS, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING SAYS THE COACH TO TWO OF HER STAR PLAYERS. THEY’VE HAD QUITE A BIT OF ROUGH TREATMENT, BOTH OF THOSE.>>Julie: THIS HAS BEEN A FEISTY ONE.>>Ian: MADDY SULLIVAN. IN THE NUMBER 25 SHIRT, SHE’S OUT THERE NOW. SO IS ALLIE LONG WHO SCORED THE OTHER NIGHT AGAINST THE SOUTH KOREANS. THAT’S A LONG WAY TO HEADER. SCORED A FEW FOR THE U.S. IN THAT TIME AS WELL. MALLORY PUGH, WE WERE WATCHING FOR A DROP IN INTENSITY FROM THE SOUTH KOREAN. THAT HASN’T HAPPENED YET, THOUGH.>>Julie: NO.>>Ian: JULIA A COLLEGE CHAMPION AT STANFORD. MORGAN BRIAN, CASEY SHORT AND A MUCH CHANGED U.S. LINEUP NOW. ON TO THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE. WON’T GET TO THAT. A MISUNDERSTANDING BETWEEN HER AND SULLIVAN.>>Julie: GREAT TO SEE ANDY SULLIVAN BACK. STANFORD CARDINAL. PLAYS FOR WASHINGTON SPIRIT. PLAYED EVERY MINUTE FOR THE WASHINGTON SPIRIT.>>Ian: SHE WAS THE TOP DRAFT PICK, WASN’T SHE?>>Julie: AFTER AN ACL TEAR AT STANFORD AND SHE GOT SETBACK A LITTLE BIT WITH THE NATIONAL TEAM, SO IT’S GREAT TO SEE HER BACK IN AGAIN.>>Ian: HAS ALREADY BEEN BOOKED IN THE GAME. I DIDN’T THINK THAT WAS THE HIGH HURDLE IT SHOULD BE FOR THE SECOND YELLOW. JUST TAKING A BIT OF A RISK WHEN YOU’RE ON THE YELLOW. BE VERY CAREFUL. A MISUNDERSTANDING BETWEEN HER AND ALLIE LONG. I THINK SOUTH KOREA MIGHT BE CHANGING THEIR GOALKEEPER SHORTLY. THAT IS AN ODD MOVE HALFWAY THROUGH THE HALF. YOU DON’T WANT TO DO THAT AT HALFTIME UNLESS THE GOALKEEPER HAD AN INJURY. WE DON’T KNOW. THIS IS THE LAST HALF AN HOUR OF THIS GAME. THE DAY STARTED WITH PRESENTATIONS AND A LOT OF EMOTIONS. CARLI LLOYD DID WELL THERE. IT WASN’T QUITE. HIT ON THAT BACK POST.>>Julie: LOOK AT THE PACE OF THAT BALL COMING.>>Ian: SHE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT SHE WAS DOING. I’M NOT QUITE SURE ABOUT THAT. WHAT WAS THAT?>>Julie: SHE THOUGHT SHE HAD A PLAY OVER HER BACK, I GUESS. TAKE A LOOK.>>Ian: THE U.S. HAVE SCORED ONE DIRECTLY FROM A CORNER. THE DELIVERY WASN’T QUITE SO GOOD. DAVIDSON FOR THE U.S. SAUERBRUNN GETS THE SCORE IN 168 FOR THE USA. HERE IS A LONG BALL. SULLIVAN CAN’T QUITE REACH IT.>>Julie: WHAT A BEAUTY. LOOK AT THIS PEACH JUST WAITING.>>Ian: NEARLY, BUT NOT QUITE. THE USA EQUALS THE TEAL’S RECORD WIN STREAK, 18 IN A ROW. 17 GOING INTO THIS ONE. BUT THEY NEED TO FIND A GOAL FROM SOMEWHERE TO CARRY ON WITH THE TREND. PUGH. DAVIDSON. CARLI LLOYD. SHE WAS IN THE RIGHT PLACE TO GET IT AWAY. I THINK THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE TO THINK LONG AND HARD, WHOEVER THE NEW COACH IS, ABOUT LEAVING CARLI LLOYD AT HOME FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES. IT’S A QUESTION WHETHER CARLI HAS THE MOTIVATION HERSELF TO GO ON TO ANOTHER TOURNAMENT AFTER EVERYTHING SHE’S DONE. PUGH. STRAIGHT AT THE GOALKEEPER. THIS IS HOW OLD SOME OF THE STAR PLAYERS WILL BE BY THE TIME OF THE NEXT WORLD CUP IN 2023. >>Julie: YOU LOOK AT THAT GROUP, THAT’S THE SPINE OF THEIR TEAM GOING UP IT. AND SUCH AN IMPORTANT GROUP, BUT THERE’S GOING TO HAVE TO BE SOME TURNOVER. YOU HAVE THREE LESS PLAYERS OF COURSE AT THE OLYMPICS WHICH WE KNOW. THEY GO FROM 23 TO 20. YOU’VE GOT TO START BLEEDING IN THAT YOUNGER GROUP AS WELL. BUT I DO HEAR WHAT YOU’RE SAYING. I DON’T THINK CARLI LLOYD HAS ANOTHER WORLD CUP IN HER, BUT I DO THINK SHE COULD OFFER SOMETHING AT THIS OLYMPICS. WHAT SHE BRINGS IS THIS INCREDIBLE HUNGER REGARDLESS OF THE GAME, AND YOU ALWAYS KNOW SHE IS GOING TO PUT HERSELF IN A POSITION TO SCORE.>>Ian: REMIND ME HOW OLD YOU WERE WHEN YOU RETIRED. >>Julie: 34 — 33.>>Ian: 33?>>Julie: I COULD HAVE DONE ANOTHER WORLD CUP BY TODAY’S STANDARDS. I WAS MORE MENTALLY DONE THAN ANYTHING. YOU KNOW THAT, TOO, RIGHT? AS A PLAYER? WHEN YOU’RE READY FOR YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE. >>Ian: JI SOYUN IS COMING OFF, THEIR BEST PLAYER. THAT WILL BE A RELIEF FOR THE U.S. DEFENDER’S BECAUSE THEY’VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL WHAT THEY’RE DOING. MOON MIRA IS COMING ON. SHE’S FOURTH IN THE LEAGUE SCORING CHANCE FOR SOUTH KOREA. AND THEY’RE GOING TO CHANGE THE GOALKEEPER AS WELL. IN FACT, THEY HAVE CHANGED THE GOALKEEPER. KIM MINJUNG, ANOTHER OF THE RED STEEL PLAYERS.>>Julie: MAYBE THIS IS PART OF THE GROWING PROCESS, BUT I WOULD ARGUE THAT YOU SHOULD TRY AND GET A WAYNE OUT OF THIS ONE AND STAY WITH YOUR STAR PLAYER AND YOUR GOALKEEPER WHO IS DOING GREAT. MAYBE IT’S PART OF THE PLAN.>>Ian: GAL — GOALKEEPER, ONLY HER EIGHTH TRAP. >>Julie: SHE PLAYED IN THURSDAY’S NIGHT GAME AND DID WELL. LLOYD’S CHASING IT. IT WON’T BE A PROBLEM.>>Ian: GOING AFTER THE PLAY. SOUTH KOREA LOOKS A LITTLE BIT MESSY FOR A MOMENT, BUT IT REMAINS 1-1. DON’T FORGET ESPN PLUS, ESPN FC, THE HOT TOPIC DEBATE SHOW AND MUCH MORE. START YOUR FREE SEVEN-DAY TRIAL. ORDER ESPN PLUS NOW. GO WITH THE BALL AROUND THE CORNER AND STAYED IN PLAY THERE AND HIT THE OUTSIDE OF THE POST IN THE END FROM JUNG.>>Julie: GREAT RUN BY SOUTH KOREA TO GET TO THAT END LINE. DID THEY CALL THAT WHEN SHE CROSSED IT? THAT’S NOT I’M CERTAIN. IT LOOKS LIKE NAEHER KNOCKED IT OUT.>>Ian: DAVIDSON DIDN’T SEE THAT MUCH OF THE ACTION AT THE WORLD CUP. PLAYED A SHADOW ROLE FOR THE MOST PART. THAT’S A GOOD BALL TOO. PLAYED WITH NO SENSE OF INFERIOR TEE COMPLEX AT ALL. >>Julie: MUCH MORE CONFIDENCE THAN SWAGGER TONIGHT. GOSH F YOU’RE SOUTH KOREA, THE FEDERATION, HOW ENCOURAGING TO SEE WHAT THIS YOUNGER GROUP FLYING HIGHER, TAKING RISKS.>>Ian: NOT A BAD EDITION FOR THE INTERIM COACH. IF YOU’RE A SCOUT YOU LOOK AT HOW PLAYERS PLAY IN A GAME LIKE THIS, THIS KIND OF TEST TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO.>>Julie: 20 MINUTES LEFT. THIS GROUP IS NOT A GROUP THAT GIVES UP EASILY. THEY ARE GOING TO FIGHT THIS ONE THROUGH. THEY WANT A WIN OUT OF THIS ONE. THEY DON’T WANT TO END THIS VICTORY TOUR ON A SOUR NOTE OR EVEN A TIE.>>Julie: CERTAINLY NOT. JUNG INSIDE. EAGER SOUTH KOREANS. FOOTBALL AROUND THE EDGE OF THE BOX, BROKEN UP BY THE U.S. IN THE END. 20 MINUTES REMAINING. DAHLKEMPER HAD A MAGNIFICENT WORLD CUP. SHE REALLY DID. A BIG REASON WHY THE U.S. WERE SO HARD TO BEAT. NOT TO MENTION KELLY O’HARA. FIVE U.S. PLAYERS REMAIN IN THE WORLD TEAM OF THE YEAR RECENTLY. MORE THAN THE RAPINOE, LAVELLE AND KELLY O’HARA. >>Julie: GOOD DEFEND BY SOUTH KOREA. ONCE THEY LOSE THE BALL THEY’RE SCRAPPING TO MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR THE U.S. TO BUILD. >>Ian: JUST BEEN HANDED THE CROWD. 33,027. ANOTHER VERY HEALTHY CROWD AGAINST THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. CONTINUE WITH THEIR LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE U.S. WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM. I THINK THE NEXT JOB IS TO GET THEM BACK IN LOVE WITH THE MEN’S TEAM. UNDERSTANDABLE AND A LITTLE DISILLUSIONED THAT MAYBE THINGS COULD BE BETTER. WE’LL SEE. MOON. A FREE KICK WAS GIVEN. THOUGHT ABOUT LETTING GO AND THEN THOUGHT BETTER OF IT.>>Julie: AGAIN THE CHALLENGE FOR THE UNITED STATES IS HOW DO YOU KICK IT INTO THE NEXT DRIVE GIVEN THAT YOU’RE PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY SPENT. >>Ian: THE BOTTOM LINE IS PRETTY SOON YOU BETTER START THINKING ABOUT WHO IS GOING TO MAKE IT INTO THE OLYMPIC TEAM. YOU MADE A GOOD POINT ONLY 20 PLACES ON THIS TEAM, NOT 23 IN THAT SQUAD. EVERYONE WHO WENT TO THE WORLD CUP CAN’T GO TO THE OLYMPICS.>>Julie: JILL ELLIS TALKS ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET YOUNGER PLAYERS IN THE TOURNAMENT WITHOUT GIVING UP A SHADE OF METAL AS SHE PUTS IT. BUT CAN YOU GIVE A YOUNGER PLAYER THE EXPERIENCE OF A BIG EVENT LIKE THAT? BECAUSE IT OBVIOUSLY HELPS FOR THAT WORLD CUP CYCLE AS WELL. IT’S GOING TO BE HARD WITH SUCH AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES ON THIS U.S. TEAM.>>Ian: 12 TEAM EVENTS, THE OLYMPIC GAMES. OUT OF PLAY. COULDN’T QUITE KEEP THAT IN PLAY. MADE A DEBUT FOR THE U.S. AT THE AGE OF 17. LOOKING AT THE U.S. MEN’S TEAM. THEY PLAY CANADA SOON ON ESPN 2. THAT GAME OCTOBER THE 15th. THAT’S A TUESDAY, 7:15 IN THE EVENING EASTERN TIME. USA AGAINST CANADA. THAT WILL BE FROM TORONTO. WHERE THEY CAN BE HEADING. LATER ON MLS DECISION DAY.>>Ian: JUST A REMINDER OF ONE OF THE BIG GAMES. PORTLAND AGAINST SAN JOSE. WIN THAT ONE IN YOU’RE IN. SULLIVAN FOR THE U.S. SOUTH KOREA DESERVES TO BE — NO QUESTION ABOUT THAT.>>Julie: AND THE CHALLENGE FOR MOST TEAMS IS SUSTAINING THAT. AND TO THEIR CREDIT, 75 IN, SOUTH KOREA HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUSTAIN IT. CHRISTEN PRESS QUICK. CAN’T QUITE CATCH IT. JUST A REMINDER OF EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED PREGAME TODAY IN CELEBRATION AND HONOR OF JILL ELLIS’S LAST GAME. HER WHOLE FAMILY HERE AND TALKING TO YOU BEFORE THE GAME ALMOST IN TEARS. ALMOST.>>Julie: I THINK THOSE WERE FULL TEARS ACTUALLY.>>Ian: A COMMENT ABOUT WHAT IT’S ALL MEANT TO HER.>>Julie: WE WERE TALKING TO HER BEFORE THE GAME AND THAT’S ALMOST VERBATIM WHAT SHE SAID. AN HONOR. OF COURSE, SHE TALKS ABOUT THAT SO MUCH, BUT SHE ALSO TALKED ABOUT JUST WANTING TO CONTINUE THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROGRAM AND CONTINUE TO LEAVE IT IN A BETTER PLACE. SHE FEELS REALLY GOOD ABOUT HER.>>Julie: THIS IS GOING TO BE A GOOD ONE HERE. I SHALL MISS MY CHANCE OF JILL ELLIS. SHE WAS BORN IN THE SAME CITY AS ME. BRIAN TOWARDS PUGH. AN ENERGIZED ATTACK. MALLORY PUGH. SHE SCORED ONCE AT THE WORLD CUP. SOMETHING YOU NEVER TAKE AWAY. CASEY SHORT. THEY’RE GOING TO MEASURE ACROSS, BUT IT’S TOO LONG. CARLI LLOYD CAN’T CATCH THAT. JUST GOT CONFIRMATION OF ATTENDANCE. OVER 33,000. EXTREMELY HEALTHY. THE CHICAGO BEARS IN ACTION IN LONDON TODAY. >>Julie: AND A NICE ENERGY IN THE CROWD. TALK ABOUT WHAT A GORGEOUS DAY IT WAS.>>Ian: THEY’VE ALMOST BECOME LIKE ROCK STARS IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. EVERYBODY WANTS TO COME UP AND GET A LOOK AT THEM IN THE FLESH. SEEING THEM ON TV IN THE SUMMER. QUITE RIGHTLY, THIS HAS BECOME ABOUT THE MATCH. THE U.S. NOT CRUISING TO THE EASY VICTORY THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD HAVE ANTICIPATED.>>Julie: HERE IS THE CONTINUED PRESS. 78 MINUTES.>>Ian: THEY CAN ALMOST SEE THE FINISHING LINE HERE. SOUTH KOREA WORKED SO, SO HARD FOR THEIR INTERIM COACH. THERE ARE IS A DANGER WITH THE HIGH PRESS. ONCE THAT’S BEATEN, YOU’VE GOT PLAYERS OUT OF POSITION.>>Julie: THEY HAVEN’T BEEN BEATEN BY IT, YET, THOUGH. THE U.S. HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO CAPITALIZE ON IT.>>Ian: THE 18 GAME WIN STREAK WAS SET BY THE TEAM IN 1990 AND 1991. IT COULD HAVE BEEN EQUALED HERE. IT MIGHT STILL BE.>>Julie: GETTING THOSE OUTSIDE BACK OR GETTING THOSE MIDFIELDERS FORWARD. THERE’S STILL THAT GAP BETWEEN THAT FRONT STREET AND THE MIDFIELD THREE THAT’S FAR TOO DEEP IN MY OPINION. NO ONE WANTS TO TRAP A MIDFIELDER COMING OUT OF MIDFIELD.>>Ian: A LITTLE ILLUSIVE, AREN’T THEY? THERE WERE A LOT OF DOUBTS ABOUT HER GOING INTO THE WORLD CUP, WOULD SHE BE GOOD ENOUGH. SHE WAS. AND IS NOW THE THIRD MOST CAPPED U.S. GOALKEEPER EVER. ALLIE LONG BACK OFF THE WAY. ANOTHER VERY PHYSICAL CHALLENGE BETWEEN CHO AND CASEY SHORT. CHO WAS COMPLAINING IT WAS A LITTLE UNPROFESSIONAL. WHAT A GOOD PIECE OF DEFENDING THAT WAS BY LIM SEONJOO.>>Julie: RIGHT AWAY RECOGNIZING CHO’S ARGUING, SHE GETS INTO TRANSITION. SHE’S TRYING TO FIND PUGH ON THAT BACK POST. GIVES THEM THE FREE DOOM TO PLAY THAT BALL IN. >>Ian: SHE WILL COME ON WITH 50 GOALS ALONG THE WAY. IT CHANGES FOR THE U.S. TEAM. MacDONALD A STRIKER WHO IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE SQUAD. CASE SHE SHORT. SHE’S JUST COME THROUGH THAT BOXING MATCH WITH CHO. CHO LOOKS LIKE THE KIND OF PLAYER THAT WOULDN’T HAVE AN ARGUMENT.>>Julie: WITH JESSICA COMING IN, I THINK THEY’RE GOING TO GO TO A THREE BACK, THE UNITED STATES. THREE FOUR THREE IS MY GUESS. AND TRY SOME PLAYERS IN THESE LAST NINE MINUTES.>>Ian: CAN THE U.S. GIVE JILL ELLIS THE WINNING SENDOFF THAT EVERYBODY HERE IN CHICAGO WOULD LIKE TO SEE? IT HIT THE POST! THERE’S A HEADER. SULLIVAN TRIED TO WIN IT. HER VERY FIRST TOUCH NEARLY SCORED. HOW MANY TIMES HAS SHE HIT THE WOODWORK?>>Julie: THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF JES McDONALD IN THOSE SITUATIONS. SHE’S SO GOOD ONSET PIECES. SO UNLUCKY. UP. GETS OVER IT. AND SIMILAR TO WHAT WE SAW WITH CARLI LLOYD ON THAT FIRST GOAL. IF SHE CAN JUST COME BACKWARDS WHERE THAT BALL CAME FROM. THAT ONE MIGHT HAVE GONE IN.>>Ian: HIT THE POST IN THE WORLD CUP AGAINST CHILE. I THINK SHE HIT THE POST TWICE IN A WORLD GAME OR WAS IT THREE TIMES? A LITTLE BIT OF CONFUSION MEANWHILE. SOUTH KOREA WERE TRYING TO MAKE A SUBSTITUTION AND BRING ON THEIR NUMBER 22 WHO HAS NOW BEEN BOOKED BEFORE COMING ON HERE BECAUSE THERE WAS SOME ADMINISTRATIVE ERROR. A LITTLE BIT CONFUSING ALL OF THAT. SON HYON HAS — SON HWAYEON HAS GONE OFF. SHE SHOULD GET A YELLOW CARD. >>Julie: THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW, AREN’T THEY?>>Ian: THE AMERICAN BENCH POINTED OUT. >>Julie: SHE’S FORGOT. >>Ian: MASS CONFUSION. SHE’S FORGOTTEN. THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE TO SEND HER OFF. THAT’S ALL A BIT OF A FARCE, ISN’T IT? DOWN TO TEN MEN — WOMEN, I SHOULD SAY.>>Julie: SHE THOUGHT IT WAS A SUB FOR HER. >>Ian: SHE’S GONE OFF.>>Julie: THAT’S A LITTLE HARSH. WOULDN’T YOU JUST HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH HER? SHE COULD EXPLAIN.>>Ian: SHE LEFT THE PITCH. HERE’S MOON TRYING TO LEAD A COUNTER ATTACK FOR A 10-WOMAN. THAT IS HARSH, ISN’T IT, REALLY? IT’S ALL A MISUNDERSTANDING. GOOD BALL, MORGAN BRIAN. LOVELY BALL, IN FACT. CARLI LLOYD TAKES THIS. THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE. DESPERATION WITH THE GOALKEEPER. IT STILL WILL BE A CORNER. PRESSURE SQUARING NOW. COULD BE A LONG FIVE MINUTES FOR THE SOUTH KOREAN DEFENSE. KMR ON, DO IT FOR ME ONE LAST TIME SHE’S SAYING. LLOYD, GOOD HEADER. ABOUT TO SEE THE PRESSURE OF ANYBODY AND SCORED AGAIN. CARLI LLOYD, 118th GOAL FOR HER COUNTRY.>>Julie: MY GUESS IS IF IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN FOR THE UNITED STATES, IT’S GOING TO BE ANOTHER SET. IT COULD BE FROM THAT ONE, NUMBER 10, CARLI LLOYD. THAT WAS A GREAT HEADER THERE.>>Ian: McDONALD TO PLAY IT BACK IN AS WELL. GOT SOMETHING ON IT. SULLIVAN. GOAL KICK. THERE’S A REAL URGENCY ABOUT THE U.S. THEY DO NOT WANT TO END JILL ELLIS’S TIME IN CHARGE BY BEING HEL AT HOME. >>Julie: SO MANY SIMILARITIES TO ABBY’S SENDOFF GAME, FIGHTING FOR THE WIN IN THE FINAL MINUTES.>>Ian: TAKEN BY MORGAN BRIAN. VERY QUICK TO WIN THE BALL BACK. PLAYING AT A DIFFERENT TEMPO THAN THEY DID FOR THE FIRST HOUR OF THE GAME HERE NOW. SOLID HEADER. SOUTH KOREA WITH ONE EYE ON THE CLOCK NOW. FOUR MINUTES OF ADDED TIME AT THE END OF THE GAME. SOUTH KOREA MAY NOT BE IN ANY PARTICULAR HURRY TO TAKE THIS FREE KICK. FRANKLY, I WOULDN’T BLAME THEM IN THE SITUATION. I WONDER IF THERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF JILL ELLIS THINKING I WON’T HAVE TO BOTHER ABOUT THIS ANYMORE. THE GOALKEEPER HAS GOT A YELLOW CARD FOR WASTING TIME I’M GUESSING, KIM MINJUNG. >>Julie: I’M GUESSING RIGHT NOW SHE’S A LITTLE BIT BOTHERED BY IT.>>Ian: SHE USED THAT MUCH TIME.>>Julie: I WILL TELL YOU THIS IS THE MOST I’VE SEEN JILL STAND IN A VICTORY TOUR IN THESE LAST FIVE GAMES.>>Ian: SHE’S CLAPPING HER HANDS, URGING THE TEAM ON. SHE WANT TS. DAVIDSON TRYING TO KEEP THE BALL ALIVE. AND A FOUL ON CHO.. DAVIDSON TRYING TO KEEP THE BALL ALIVE. AND A FOUL ON CHO.. DAVIDSON TRYING TO KEEP THE BALL ALIVE. AND A FOUL ON CHO.S. DAVIDSON TRYING TO KEEP THE BALL ALIVE. AND A FOUL ON CHO. . DAVIDSON TRYING TO KEEP THE BALL ALIVE. AND A FOUL ON CHO.IT. DAVIDSON TRYING TO KEEP THE BALL ALIVE. AND A FOUL ON CHO. KEEPING THE GAME GOING. REFEREE INSTRUCTING ON. PLAY IS GOING TO BE PULLED BACK FOR AN OFFSIDE. 20 YARDS BACK FROM THERE. SURPRISING SCORE, ISN’T IT? WHO THOUGHT?>>Julie: EVEN MORE SURPRISING TO ME IS HOW SOUTH KOREA HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUSTAIN IT.>>Ian: McDONALD. THE BACK SIDE, AND MALLORY PUGH WHO BLOCKED A WONDERFUL CHANCE TO WIN IT. SHOULD HAVE SCORED. >>Julie: THIS IS SUCH A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY. GREAT BALL CROSS. PLAY IT AGAIN BY PRESS I THINK IT WAS. AND SHE JUST KNOWS KEEP THIS IN FRONT. SHE STILL HAS TO TAKE IT OFF THE HALF VOLLEY, BUT ENTIRELY MISSED THE BALL ON THAT ONE. THAT’S ONE YOU CAN SEE HER HANDS IN HER HEAD. — HER HEAD IN HER HANDS. SHE WANTS THAT ONE BACK. >>Ian: NINE TIMES OUT OF TEN SHE PUT TS RIGHT IN THE BACK OF THE NET. REALLY GOT NO CONTACT ON THE BALL. SOUTH KOREANS ARE TIRED NOW. THEY WORKED VERY, VERY HARD. AND THEY MIGHT HAVE ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY. HEROIC DEFENDING. WIDE OF THE POST, JUST NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, IS IT? CHRISTEN PRESS THIS TIME. YOU WONDERED FOR A SECOND IF THIS WAS THE MOMENT FOR THEM.>>Julie: AND SHE GETS THE DIVIDE ON THAT FIRST ONE, THE CUT, EVERYTHING RIGHT. AND IT’S JUST WIDE. . THE ENTIRE TEAM OFF THE BENCH OFF OF THAT ONE. STILL STANDING, MANY OF THEM.>>Ian: LATE SUBSTITUTION BEING MADE BY SOUTH KOREA BRINGING ON LEE YOUNGJU. PLAYS FOR THE TEAM IN JAPAN. IF YOU’RE WONDERING HOW HAVEN’T GOT THE WINNER IN THE CLOSING STAGES. LLOYD, STILL MIGHT BE TIED. THIS MIGHT BE THE LAST OPPORTUNITY. McDONALD FROM THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE. BACK TO CHRISTEN PRESS. AND CARLI LLOYD! CELEBRATING. IT WON’T COUNT. AND CHICAGO IS DENIED THE FAIRY TALE FINISH. THE CROWD HERE, WE’RE ABSOLUTELY BESEECHING WOULD HAPPEN. SCORE AND SENTIMENT ARE COMPLETELY BRAZEN. SHE CLEARLY DIDN’T GET THE SCRIPT EITHER. THIS IS THE REFEREE.>>Ian: THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN FITTING IF IT WAS CARLI LLOYD OF ALL PEOPLE WHO CAME OUT WITH THE WINNING GOAL IN STOPPAGE TIME IN JILL ELLIS’S LAST GAME.>>Julie: LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT IT, SEE FOR OURSELF. THERE SHE IS AGAIN. IT’S WHEN THE BALL STRUCK. AND CARLI LLOYD IS CLEARLY OFFSIDE. WOW, THAT SEEMED AWFULLY HARSH IN A GAME LIKE THIS.>>Ian: THAT WILL BE WORTH ANOTHER LOOK IN A MOMENT. WE DON’T HAVE THE OLD LINES. McDONALD WITH A FANTASTIC LONG THROW IN. WHAT HAPPENED THERE? THEY CAN’T BELIEVE THE DECISION, BUT THAT’S WHAT IT IS. U.S. GET A CORNER. SO MUCH DRAMA. SO WITH A HEADER ANYWHERE WILL DO. LLOYD WITH A HEADER! PUGH, DENIED! THAT BALL IS LEADING A CHARMED LIFE. IT JUST WON’T GO IN. >>Julie: OH MY GOODNESS.>>Ian: TWO CHANCES FOR MALLORY PUGH NOW. 1. they should change world cup years so there is a break between olympics. they should have other major tournaments as well…

  2. i wonder why press didn’t straighten her hair ONLY because i’ve seen it natural about 2 times since 2015 and i’ve seen every uswnt and nwsl games the last 3 years, except 4.

  3. I feel bad for Alyssa Naeher. That’s an extremely difficult shot to save. That ball was shot low and to the corner and with all that traffic it’s very difficult to save that one. That was a well struck ball. It’s hard to save those shots when they are in put in those corners.

  4. Fitting that Ellis goes out with a whimper. She rode the coat tails coming in, got a free one, blew the Oly's and mismanaged and under performed on the last. She may have the win record, but, it's a reflection on the players and vastly superior depth…not the coach. I'm not the same drooling sycophant as everyone else, blinded by what they're told. I'm glad she's done. She royally botched many aspects of this team and has held them back. Now, can we get a decent keeper?

25:22 Watch Naeher. She charges the attacker, fine, good. What does she do when she gets to her? She goes into a kneel, leaning backwards, away from the play. It's committing without committing. She gets juked to her LEFT, towards the end line, taking herself further out of the play. She runs out and immediately goes into a kneeling position in the worst possible place, opening the entire field to the attacker. She even ran out and sat back as she went to ground. If not for Sauerbrunn's coverage, that's a goal.

38:33 I am certainly a Naeher hater. I'll openly admit it. I hate everything about her game. She is massively flawed to her core…her mechanics, technique, emotional state, awareness. I do try to be fair, though. This is a tough goal. Sauerbrunn steps up and splits the goal in two for the attacker. Also obstructing Naeher's view. Naeher's bounce to her left, pre shot, is her choosing the side of Sauerbrunn the shot will come from. Clearly, she chose wrong. As soon as she commits early, it determines the shot path for the attacker. Naeher moves out of the way and the shooter takes advantage of the open net. Naeher's hop is a wasted action as a shot from the left is covered by Sauerbrunn. Naeher overreacted and bit the apple early, taking herself out of the play. She has zero patience or calm. Any movement and she's juked out of position. Always. Just look at the netcam view at 39:05…she just hops out of the way. If she remains in the center of goal…it's not a goal.

43:03 Good save Naeher. Why? Because she was in the center of goal and in position to make any save. Why was she in the center of goal? Only because the play was drifting center as she was favoring her right, pre shot. She wasn't expecting a shot. She had no time to mess it up. And it was almost, right at her.

55:07 Watch the build up of the SK (S. Korea) attack and watch Naeher. Initially she makes the right decision and realizes she's heavily favoring the left side and backs off, to center. That's where she needs to stay. She doesn't. 55:20 the attacker is on the end line with Sauerbrunn in front of her. There is no window for a shot on the end line. It's threading a piece of paper. The only possible attack from that position is a centering pass. Which is exactly what happens, what always happens. Naeher can't do anything but whiff on it as she's not in position. And is fortunate that Short closed down the other attacker, that Naeher was completely unaware of, and cleared the ball. There is absolutely no reason to be on the post in that situation. She can be in the center of goal (or a hair left of center) and have the same angle as being on the post while still covering the entire net. She plays with blinders on and continually unaware of the attacker's options or where her net is. And that's saying something as she reached out and touched the post. Grabbed it, for security. It's her blanky. She's weak minded and is only comfortable against a post…which is almost never a place a keeper should be. Only rare circumstances. Really, freeze it a 55:21…look at that, what could she possibly stop? What player will magically hook a shot six inches around a post? What about the NINETEEN FEET of open goal behind her?

1:15:12 "I was more mentally done, than anything." -Foudy haha. So true, so very true Lollipop.

1:31:47 "That's the beauty of Jess MacDonald. She's so good on set pieces." No, she's not. She misses all of them. She hits wood work a lot and that's nothing. If that was the point, she'd be best. It's not and she's not. She must close her eyes or something. She has the worst finish of any attacking player on this team. Granted, her cap count is still minute. She gets in good positions, I'll give her that, but she can't finish.

1:42:50 Carly's no goal. Man, serious props to the SK defender. She pulled up on purpose to draw Lloyd off. She lunged forward just in time. Severely heads up play from her!

Wow…S. Korea played amazing. They're the winners of this match, imo. Down a player, refs giving the US gift after gift and they stay strong and kept the US at bay. SK's entire team played in unison. Even when the US had some great opportunities in the box…defenders were consistently marking up and complementing the keeper, unaffected by the pressure. Calm, methodical, unphased. They played like the US normally does. Intense pressure and quick passes. Passing out of the tightest spaces and keeping possession. But, even to the end…Ellis keeps a carousel of players ever churning. Every game, new personnel and no rhythm.

Excited to see what happens moving forward!

    Thanks for posting!
