Soccer Tips : How to Set Up a Goal Kick

Articles

Hi, my name is Guillermo Gomez and I coach
soccer. Today I’ll be talking to you about how to set up a goal kick. It’s funny but
a lot of times with your soccer, they end up loosing games because they didn’t know
how to properly set up a goal kick. The team, the defensive team can intercept balls very
easily after a goal kick and score goals. So you actually want to work these very carefully
with your players so that doesn’t happen to you. So normally, the way it works, you have
a goal keeper right here. If the players are young that means that the kick probably not
going to go as far as possible so you have to have a very defensive approach to it. So
what you do is position the ball towards the middle, o.k. That way you have their defenders
spread out evenly because they don’t know where the ball is going to go. It might go
to the left or it might go to the right. What I like to do with the defensive line, is to
put one right here, one here and one in front right here, o.k. And then I have my mid fielders,
o.k., right about here, o.k. Because I know that if their kick is not very strong I need
to have for my defensive side of the field, so that they can win that ball right away
and move forward with it. Or in case they didn’t, if the other team gets possession
of the ball, we’re already back here, o.k., and are ready to defend our goal in case the
other team gets possession of the ball. So, one of the things you want to concentrate
when you do a goal kick is to make sure that the ball comes out of the penalty area, which
is the eighteenth yard line, which is this quarter. The ball needs to come out, completely
out of there before the defender or your own team can receive that ball. So the ball needs
to clear that area, o.k. You want to emphasize protecting your goal, o.k. So as soon as the
ball is contained, the ball goes out, o.k. If you have a kicker that can send the ball
far away, then perhaps you want to move you mid fielders farther away; and the emphasis
when you kick the ball is actually start to kick it to the sidelines, o.k., to avoid the
risk of an interception and the other team doing a fast break or a fast attack against
you. So again, set up the ball in the middle. You kick through the sides, much better, o.k.
And that way you can actually possibly take the ball through the lines towards the end
and avoid any problems or risk when you’re playing the game of soccer. So that’s how
you will set up a goal kick.
