(TOM) IT’S FRIDAY NIGHT– SO HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES ARE ABOUT TO KICK OFF ALL OVER THE AREA. (ANITA) ONE ALMOST DIDN’T HAPPEN– BECAUSE, WELL, THERE WEREN’T ENOUGH PLAYERS. BUT A NEAR-GAME TIME SOLUTION AT PERQUIMANS COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL WILL ALLOW THE PIRATES TO HIT THE FIELD IN A BIT. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S JASON MARKS– WITH THE DILEMMA– AND THE DECISION. (JASON MARKS REPORTING) (JASON) HERE AT PERQUIMANS COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL THERE WAS SOME QUESTION IF THEY WOULD HAVE ENOUGH PLAYERS TO PLAY IN TONIGHT’S FOOTBALL GAME. I’M TOLD THEY WILL USING PLAYERS FROM JUNIOR VARSITY. (VO) HERE IS WHAT’S GOING ON. BECAUSE OF A LACK OF SUBSTITUTES. AS THE SEASON WENT BY SEVERAL PLAYERS ARE NO LONGER PLAYING BECAUSE OF INJURIES. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS THE COUNTY STARTED A JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM BUT THE SUPERINTEND WAS CONCERNED ABOUT HAVING THE JV PLAYERS ON VARSITY BECAUSE IT CREATES SAFETY CONCERNS FOR THE SMALLER YOUNGER PLAYERS GOING UP AGAIN BIGGER UPPER CLASS MAN. (SOT) (MATTHEW CHEESEMAN/PERQUIMANS COUNTRY SUPERINTENDENT) “IS THE STRAIN THAT THAT IT ACTUALLY PUT IN THERE WAS THE POPULATION OF FOOTBALL PLAYERS DID NOT INCREASE SO WHEN WE ADDED A JV PROGRAM YOU ESSENTIALLY CUT THE VARSITY PROGRAM IN HALF” (JASON) THE SUPERINTENDENT SAYS THE RUMORS ABOUT TRYING TO SHUT THE VARSITY PROGRAM DOWN ARE SIMPLY FALSE. HE SAYS EVIDENCE OF THAT IS THE $1.4 MILLION FOOTBALL STADIUM RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. IN PERQUIMANS COUNTY JASON MARKS 10 ON YOUR SIDE
