STEALING CREDIT CARD NUMBERS AND TRANSFERRING MONEY INTO THEIR OWN STUDENT ACCOUNTS. CBS 2’S ALICE GAINER REPORTS FROM NEW BRUNSWICK. Reporter: 18-YEAR-OLD BRENDAN DIVARA FROM TOTOWA, NEW JERSEY, WAS THE FIRST TO FACE A JUDGE TODAY BY VIDEO LINK FROM JAIL. HE IS ONE OF EIGHT RUTGERS FOOTBALL PLAYERS CHARGED IN A CREDIT CARD FRAUD SCHEME THAT POLICE SAY TOOK PLACE BETWEEN APRIL AND MAY. THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT WE’RE CONFIDENT WAS TAKEN IS APPROXIMATELY $11,000. Reporter: THE MIDDLESEX COUNTY PROSECUTOR SAYS THE MEN, 7 OF THEM PICTURED HERE, GOT CREDIT CARD NUMBERS BELONGING TO OTHER PEOPLE ON THE “DARK WEB.” BUT HE WOULDN’T SAY HOW MANY VICTIMS THERE WERE OR MORE ELABORATION. INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED BY THE STUDENTS SO THEY COULD USE THE CREDIT CARDS TO PUT MONEY ON THE RUTGERS EXPRESS ACCOUNTS. Reporter: AN RU EXPRESS ACCOUNT IS A STUDENT DEBT CAMPUS CASH-FREE ALTERNATIVE THAT WORKS LIKE A DEBIT CARD. SOME OF THE STUDENTS WHO GOT THE MONEY WOULD GO TO SUCH PLAYS AS A BOOKSTORE IN COLLEGE AND PURCHASE SUCH THINGS AS GIFT CARDS WHICH IS A RED FLAG FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT. Reporter: HE SAYS CREDIT CARD COMPANIES ALSO NOTICED THE FRAUD AND SHUT IT DOWN IMMEDIATELY. SEVERAL OF THE PLAYERS HAVE SINCE LEFT THE RUTGERS FOOTBALL TEAM. IN A STATEMENT, THE RUTGERS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SAID: WE ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED AND FRUSTRATED. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING EXTREMELY HARD TO BUILD A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE ACROSS THE DEPARTMENT AND THIS NEWS DETRACTS FROM THE GREAT STRIDES WE HAVE MADE. WE WILL CONTINUE THAT WORK. AS FOR REACTION AROUND CAMPUS, MANY HOPE THIS DOESN’T LEAVE A PERMANENT STAIN ON THE SCARLET KNIGHTS’ REPUTATION. I DON’T WANT SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO RUIN ANY OF THE REPUTATION OF THIS SCHOOL. A BATCH OF BAD APPLES SHOULDN’T INFECT EVERYBODY. JUST PROSECUTE THOSE, NOT EVERYONE. Reporter: THE DEFENDANT WAS RELEASED AND WILL BE BACK IN COURT IN OCTOBER.

  1. Remember that a year ago, Rutgers University New Brunswick's president Robert Barchi gave a fraternity who attempted to rape sorority members through spiked drinks a slap in the wrist? Remember that 2 years ago, I was disability discriminated by Rutgers ODS and GSE (specifically Carlie Andrews, Bill Welsh, and Alisa Belzer), and Robert Barchi accused me of being the perpetrator and a liar.
