(ANITA) TAKING BACK THE COMMUNITY — (ANITA) A MAN IN NORFOLK IS TRYING TO BRING A FOOTBALL SUMMER CAMP TO THE YOUNG TERRACE NEIGHBORHOOD. BUT HE NEEDS HELP FROM THE COMMUNITY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. (ANITA) 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S MARIELENA BALOURIS HAS MORE ON WHAT THIS MAN NEEDS — AND WHAT HE THINKS IT’LL DO FOR THE COMMUNITY. (MARIELENA) DESHAWN FULLER SAYS IN THE PAST, THERE WAS A FOOTBALL SUMMER CAMP IN YOUNG TERRACE. (MARIELENA) BUT OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, IT’S GONE AWAY. AND HE SAYS THAT’S BECAUSE GANGS AND INCREASING CRIME IN THE AREA. HE SAYS SPORTS GAVE HIM A SAFE HAVEN, AND HE’S HOPING HE CAN NOW DO THE SAME FOR HIS NEIGHBORHOOD. (MARIELENA BALOURIS) THE STREETS SURROUNDING THE YOUNG TERRACE COMMUNITY CENTER WERE QUIET WEDNESDAY MORNING. A STARK CONTRAST TO THE VIOLENCE THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAS GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO. DESHAWN FULLER, ORGANIZING FOOTBALL PROGRAM “WE’VE HAD SHOOTINGS, WE’VE HAD DEATHS WHERE A YOUNG GUY GOT KILLED OVER HERE.” IT’S WHERE DESHAWN FULLER GREW UP. AND IT’S WHERE HE’S RETURNED — HOPING TO RESURRECT THE SPORT THAT GAVE HIM A WAY OUT. MY SAFE HAVEN AND I WANT IT TO BE SOMEONE ELSE’S SAFE HAVEN AS WELL.” THAT’S WHY HE’S STARTING “CLOVER’S FOOTBALL CAMP” IN JULY — JAYLEN LAMB, PLAYING FOOTBALL I LOVE FOOTBALL — FOR KIDS LIKE JAYLEN LAMB. THE ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD LINEMAN DOESN’T KNOW HOW LONG HE’LL STAY ON THE FIELD, BUT EVEN AT HIS AGE — HE RECOGNIZES WHAT SPORTS COULD MEAN FOR HIS NEIGHBORHOOD. JAYLEN LAMB, PLAYING FOOTBALL WELL HOPEFULLY IT WILL BRING PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY SO THERE’S NO MORE GANGS AND STUFF STAYING OFF THE STREETS AND ACTUALLY ON THE FIELD, LEARNING ABOUT SOME STUFF FULLER HAS THE KIDS AND HE HAS THE SPACE. DESHAWN THEM SOMETHING ELSE BESIDES THE GANG LIFE BUT TO GIVE THEM THE FULL FOOTBALL CAMP EXPERIENCE, HE NEEDS HELP. FROM EQUIPMENT TO VOLUNTEERS, THERE’S NOTHING FULLER SAYS HE WON’T BE ABLE TO USE. DESHAWN FULLER, ORGANIZING FOOTBALL PROGRAM I AVOIDED THE CRIME LIFE AND DRUGS LIFE BECAUSE MY ESCAPE WAS FOOTBALL SO I WANT TO AFFORD THIS OPPORTUNITY TO OTHER KIDS THAT ACTUALLY WANT TO GET AWAY FROM IT, THAT DONT WANT TO BE A PART OF IT HOPING HE CAN TAKE WHAT HE’S EXPERIENCED AND MENTOR THE KIDS PLAYING ON THE SAME FIELD HE USED YEARS AGO. (MARIELENA) IF YOU HAVE SPARE FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT THAT YOU’RE ABLE TO DONATE, OR IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE PROGRAM, WE’LL HAVE THAT INFORMATION POSTED ON WAVY-DOT-COM.
