AND A PLEASANT GOOD
EVENING TO YOU EVERYBODY. WELCOME TO MESA COMMUNITY
COLLEGE FOR EXCITING NATIONAL JUNIOR
COLLEGE FOOTBALL. I’M JEFF LOWERY
WITH MCTV SPORTS. TONIGHT WE’RE IN THE
WESTERN STATES FOOTBALL LEAGUE AS THE WINLESS
SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES 0-4 BY WAY OF
RECORD, AND THEY’RE COMING INTO MESA TO TAKE
ON THE THUNDERBIRDS. THEY’RE THE 19TH RANKED
TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. THEY COME IN WITH
A RECORD OF 3-1. I’M JEFF LOWERY
WITH MCTV SPORTS. SO GLAD YOU COULD
JOIN US HERE TONIGHT. SCOTTSDALE HAVING A TOUGH
START HERE TO THE 2016 SEASON UNDER THEIR HEAD
COACH DOUG MADOSKI, WHO IS IN HIS 11TH SEASON. THEY’VE HAD A LOT OF
SUCCESS IN RECENT YEARS. IN FACT, THEY’VE BEEN TO THE
VALLEY OF THE SUN BOWL THE LAST THREE YEARS,
BUT THIS YEAR THEY’RE OFF TO AN 0-4 START, LIKE I
SAID, WITH A VERY YOUNG ROSTER, BUT THEY
FEATURE ONE OF THE TOP QUARTERBACKS IN THE
WESTERN STATE FOOTBALL LEAGUE IN ANDREW BUNCH. HE HAD AN OUTSTANDING GAME
LAST WEEK, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS PRESSURED FOR A GOOD
PART OF THE GAME, AS THE SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING
ARTICHOKES LOST TO PHOENIX COLLEGE A NATIONALLY
RANKED TEAM 32-31. THEY’RE STRONG UPFRONT ON
THE DEFENSIVE SIDE, LED BY JOEL RUFINO AND
MAURICE BURTON. BURTON IS BEING TALENTED
BY MANY DIVISION I COLLEGES. AND THE RUMOR HAS IT
THAT ARIZONA STATE IS INTERESTED IN
THE DOWNLINE MEN. ON THE OTHER SIDE, MESA
COMING IN, THEY’RE 3-1 BY WAY OF RECORD. THEY’RE UNDEFEATED IN
CONFERENCE PLAY, ONE OF ONLY 3 UNDEFEATED TEAMS
LEFT IN CONFERENCE PLAY. THEY’RE ARE 19TH
IN THE NATION. AND THEY’RE LED BY THEIR
HEAD COACH RYAN FELKER, WHO HAS TRULY DONE AN
OUTSTANDING JOB IN TURNING THIS PROGRAM AROUND. PRIOR TO HIS ARRIVAL TO
THE THUNDERBIRDS BACK IN THE 2012, THIS TEAM HAD
SIX COACHES IN A SIX-YEAR SPAN. THEY’VE MADE IT TO A BOWL
GAME IN TWO OF THE FOUR YEARS FOR RYAN FELKER. AND THEY HAVE ONE OF THE
TOP OFFENSES AND ONE OF THE GREATEST PASSING
TEAMS IN THE NATION. AND THEY’RE LED BY
QUARTERBACK RATHEN RICEDORFF. HE HAS THROWN FOR OVER
1400 YARDS THIS YEAR. HE’S GOT A TREMENDOUS
TOUCHDOWN-TO-INTERCEPTION RATIO. AND TO EXPOUND ON THAT
JUST A BIT, THEY HAVE 7 DIFFERENT PLAYERS WHO
ALREADY HAVE TEN OR MORE RECEPTIONS THIS YEAR. WELL, WE HAD A CHANCE TO
TALK TO BOTH HEAD COACHES TODAY. AND WE’LL SEND IT OVER TO
ASHLEY NEVEL, TONIGHT’S SIDELINE REPORTER. THUNDERBIRDS COACH RYAN
FELKER IS DEFINITELY PLEASED WITH THE WAY HIS
TEAM HAS STARTED THIS SEASON. AFTER LOSING THEIR FIRST
GAME, THEY’VE WON THREE STRAIGHT GAMES AND RANKED
19TH IN THE COUNTRY. QUARTERBACK RATHEN
RICEDORFF HAS A LOT TO DO WITH THAT SUCCESS. HE LEADS THE CONFERENCE IN YARDS
PER GAME AND TOUCHDOWNS. HE’S THROWN TOUCHDOWNS TO
8 DIFFERENT RECEIVERS, SO NOW MESA IS REALLY FOCUSED
ON THEIR RUNNING BACKS. IT’S A TOTALLY DIFFERENT
STORY OVER AT SCOTTSDALE. DOUG MADOSKI AND HIS TEAM
HOPE TO WIN THEIR FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON, BUT
ALTHOUGH THE ARTICHOKES HAVEN’T WON A GAME YET,
THEY’RE STILL COMPETING AT A HIGH LEVEL. AND HAVE REMAINED
CLOSE IN GAMES. SO NOW THE ARTICHOKES ARE
DEFINITELY CONFIDENT THAT THEY CAN WIN. AND THEY’RE MOTIVATED
IN THAT LOCKER ROOM. EXPECT A COMPETITIVE
GAME TONIGHT. BACK TO YOU. TONIGHT’S GAME IS A
NON-CONFERENCE GAME FOR BOTH OF THESE TEAMS. SO A GOOD WARMUP FOR
BOTH THESE CLUBS. AND IT’S THE FIRST MEETING
AGAINST SCOTTSDALE AND MESA HERE IN 2016. SO WHEN WE COME BACK ALL THE
EXCITING PLAY-BY-PLAY ACTION. IT’S AT ARTICHOKES AND
THE THUNDERBIRDS ON MCTV SPORTS. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE BACK HERE AT JOHN
RIGGS RIGS STADIUM ON THE CAMPUS OF MESA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WE’RE GETTING SET FOR NATIONAL
JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL. AS WE MENTIONED AT THE
TOP OF THE BROADCAST, SCOTTSDALE 0-4 BY WAY OF
RECORD, BUT I’LL TELL YOU, THIS IS A TEAM THAT HAS
PLAYED EXTREMELY WELL CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT
THEY ARE 0-4 THIS YEAR. SO THIS IS A TEAM THAT HAS
AN AVERAGE MARGIN OF THE LOSS THIS YEAR
OF 4 POINTS. OF COURSE, IF YOU ASK DOUG
MADOSKI, HE’S GOING TO TELL YOU THAT’S
NOT ACCEPTABLE. MESA IS HAVING AN
OUTSTANDING YEAR. THEY’RE COMING OF A 3-7
SEASON, BUT NOW THESE TEAMS HEAD TO HEAD SINCE
RYAN FELKER TOOK OVER THE MESA PROGRAM. SCOTTSDALE HAS BEEN ON
THE WINNING END 6 OF THE 7 MEETINGS, INCLUDING
A 5-GAME WIN STREAK. SO I’LL TELL YOU, A LOT
OF PRIDE HERE TONIGHT AS THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS
TRY TO BREAK THAT 5-GAME LOSING STREAK HEAD TO
HEAD WITH SCOTTSDALE. SO WE’RE READY FOR
THE OPENING KICKOFF. AND SCOTTSDALE WILL BE
SENDING OUT — SCOTTSDALE WILL BE SENDING OUT
THEIR KICKER ERIC LOPEZ. AND ACTUALLY, I STAND
CORRECTED, KEVIN MACIAS THEIR STARTING PUNTER
WILL DO THE HONORS. AND BACK DEEP FOR MESA
IS SHAUN RICHARDS. SO IT’S MESA
AND SCOTTSDALE. AND SHAUN RICHARDS 5’8,
165 POUNDS OUT OF TEMPE’S MARCO DE NIZA. I HAD A CHANCE TO TALK
TO RYAN FELKER, THE HEAD COACH OF THE MESA
THUNDERBIRDS, JUST A COUPLE OF MOMENTS AGO. AND HE SAYS, YOU CAN THROW
OUT ALL THE STATISTICS ON THIS GAME. I KNOW MESA IS OFF TO AN
OUTSTANDING START, BUT YOU CAN THROW OUT ALL THE
STATISTICS AS THIS KICK IS UNDERWAY, AND THIS
THIS GAME IS UNDERWAY. IT’S GOING TO BE FIELDED
BACK AT THE 2-YARD LINE BY RICHARDS, BRINGS IT UP
TO THE 15, AND HE’LL BE CORRALLED AROUND THE
21-YARD LINE AFTER A 16-YARD RETURN AND A
NICE JOB THERE BY THE SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING
ARTICHOKES ON SPECIAL TEAMS. IT WILL BE 1ST DOWN AND
10, AS THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS WILL BE COMING OUT AND
FEATURING TRULY ONE OF THE GREAT QUARTERBACKS,
IN FACT, SECOND IN THE COUNTRY IN PASSING THIS
YEAR, AND TALKING ABOUT RATHEN RICEDORFF, 1400
YARDS THIS YEAR, 15 TOUCHDOWNS. AND THEY COME OUT RUNNING
THE BALL, AND A POWER RUN, GETTING THE EDGE TO THAT
FAR SIDE AND PICKING UP A GOOD 6 YARDS THE
PLAY IS JOCQUEZ KALILI. SO A GAIN OF — NOW THEY
MOVE IT UP TO THE 20, RIGHT AROUND THE 21
YARD-LINE — 24 YARD LINE. IT’S 2ND DOWN AND 7. NO SCORE. WE’RE JUST UNDERWAY. 2ND DOWN AND 3 FOR MESA. RICEDORFF WITH KALILI
IN THE BACKFIELD. AND THEY COME OUT RUNNING
ALMOST THE SAME PLAY OVER THE LEFT TACKLE. AND CLOSE TO A 1ST DOWN. A GAIN OF 2 WILL BE BRING
UP A 3RD DOWN AND 1. AND WE WERE TALKING TO
THE COACHING STAFF, THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
FOR MESA THIS WEEK. AND, OF COURSE, THAT’S
RYAN FELKER THE HEAD COACH. AND, YOU KNOW, THEY WANT
TO ESTABLISH THE RUN. THEY WANT TO DO A BETTER
JOB RUNNING THE BALL HERE TONIGHT AND IN THE
REST OF THE SEASON. AND THEY FEEL THAT’S GOING
TO, OF COURSE, OPEN UP THAT LETHAL PASSING GAME
AS THE STOP IS MADE BY THE STRONG SCOTTSDALE DEFENSE. WE TALKED ABOUT THEIR
ABILITY TO MAKE THE STOP UP FRONT. BOZTON SANDERS, WHO WILL
TAKE THE TACKLE, THE 6 FOOT, 224 POUNDER OUT OF
CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL IN PEORIA, ARIZONA. SO 4TH DOWN AND 3 AND OUT,
4TH DOWN AND 2 COMING UP HERE FOR MESA. WE’RE JUST UNDERWAY. NO SCORE. SO RYAN GRIMM IS BACK, A
6’3, 160 POUND SOPHOMORE. SCOTTSDALE WILL SEND DION
MARTINEZ, A VERY FAST RUNNER, ONE OF THE FASTEST
RUNNERS ON THE TEAM, BACK TO RECEIVE THE PUNT. AND THIS ONE IS GOING
TO LAND RIGHT AROUND THE 40-YARD LINE. THEY’LL GO FOR 36 YARDS,
NO RETURN, AND A LOOK AT THE OFFENSE. SCOTTSDALE DIDN’T TELL US WHO
WAS THE STARTING QUARTERBACK. YOUR GUESS WILL BE AS GOOD
AS OURS, BUT ANDREW BUNCH WHO HAD A — I THOUGHT HE
HAD A FINE GAME LAST WEEK AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED
PHOENIX COLLEGE, WAS INJURED AT THE TAIL
END OF THAT GAME. AND THAT’S GOING TO BRING
UP A 1ST DOWN AND 10. SCOTTSDALE WILL BE
STARTING AT THEIR OWN 42-YARD LINE. AND THEY’RE COMING
OUT THROWING THE BALL. AND IT IS BATTED
DOWN INCOMPLETE. A TREMENDOUS DIVING PASS
DEFLECTION BY MARCUS BRANTLEY, THE SOPHOMORE
OUT OF LOCAL RED MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL. IT’S INCOMPLETE, BRINGING
UP A 2ND DOWN AND 10. SO A TREMENDOUS PLAY
COMING OUT OF THE MESA SECONDARY, VIRTUALLY
AN EMPTY BACKFIELD. THOUGH MICAH CAMPOS
FLANKING HIS QUARTERBACK. BUNCH ROLLING OUT,
THROWING DEEP DOWN FIELD, AND OVERSHOOTS HIS
INTENDED TARGET, SALVATORE CANNELLA — OR CHECK THAT. THAT’S NUMBER 4, THAT’S
ALEX JACKSON JR., THEIR 2ND LEADING
RECEIVER THIS YEAR. AND THERE IS CANNELLA. SO NOW IT’S 3RD
DOWN AND 10. AGAIN, THE BALL AT THE
42-YARD LINE, 2 INCOMPLETE PASSES ON 1ST
AND 2ND DOWN. AND NOW SCOTTSDALE, BUNCH
SACKED BACK AT THE 31-YARD LINE. AND ONE OF THE KEYS I
THOUGHT LAST WEEK WITH PHOENIX COLLEGE AND
THEIR VICTORY OVER THE SCOTTSDALE TEAM WAS THEIR
ABILITY TO GET TO THE QUARTERBACK. AND RASHUN PARKER, A
TREMENDOUS 6’2, 240 POUNDER WAS IN THERE
ALONG WITH JAMEER OUTSEY. AND WHEN TALKED ABOUT
PARKER, THIS IS A YOUNG MAN WHO WAS THE DEFENSIVE
PLAYER OF THE WEEK LAST WEEK IN THE WESTERN
STATES FOOTBALL LEAGUE. AND HE’S HAVING ON
OUTSTANDING SEASON OUT OF CHANDLER, ARIZONA. SO A 3 AND OUT HERE FOR
SCOTTSDALE, LOOKING AT A 4TH DOWN AND 20 FROM
THE 32-YARD LINE. AND KEVIN MACIAS
WITH A NICE PUNT. THIS ONE IS GOING TO ROLL
ALL THE WAY DOWN CLOSE TO THE 15-YARD LINE. THAT WILL BE A 53-YARD
PUNT WITH NO RETURN. AND I DON’T THINK YOU CAN
ASK ANY MORE FROM YOUR PUNTER THAN THAT. SO WE HAVE A
SCORELESS TIE. 12:03 LEFT TO GO. AND TODAY’S GAME IS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE MARICOPA COMMUNITY
COLLEGES, WHERE YOUR EDUCATION AND
SUCCESS COMES FIRST. BY SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE,
LEARN, GROW, AND ACHIEVE. BY MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE,
DECLARED SUCCESS YOUR MAJOR, IT’S ALL AT MCC. BY COX COMMUNICATIONS,
YOUR FRIEND IN THE DIGITAL AGE. AND BY MCTV, MARICOPA
COLLEGES TELEVISION, WE’RE PLUGGED IN TO WHAT’S HAPPENING
AT YOUR MARICOPA COLLEGE. 1ST DOWN AND 10 FOR MESA,
THEIR 2ND POSSESSION OF THE GAME. AS THEY START FROM THEIR
OWN 15-YARD LINE, AND RICEDORFF COMES OUT THROWING,
AND THE BALL WAS DROPPED. AND THEN A BIG HIT COMING
IN BY NUMBER 7 — ON NUMBER 7, C.J. LEGGETT, WHO IS ONE OF
THEIR TOP RUNNING BACKS THIS YEAR, EVEN THOUGH
THIS MESA TEAM, FOR THE MOST PART, THEY THROW
ABOUT 68, 69% OF THE TIME. AND THEY’RE LOOKING
AT A 2ND DOWN AND 10. NO SCORE. JUST UNDER 12 MINUTES LEFT TO GO
HERE IN THE OPENING QUARTER. AND YOU’RE WATCHING
WESTERN STATES FOOTBALL HERE ON MCTV SPORTS. JEFF LOWERY ALONG WITH
ASHLEY NEVEL, OUR SIDELINE REPORTER, OUR
ENTIRE MCTV CREW. 11:58 ON THE CLOCK. SCORELESS TIE. PLAY CLOCK DOWN TO 2. AND OUT OF THE SHOTGUN,
AND THEY’LL RUN THE COUNTER AND C.J. GETS OUT OF BOUNDS AS HE
RACES TO THAT FAR SIDE AND OUTRACING A COUPLE OF
DEFENDERS AND GETTING OVER THERE QUICKLY, MAYBE NOT
TO MAKE THE TACKLE, BUT THE SOPHOMORE, THE
HIGHLY-TALENTED MAURICE BURTON, 6’0 250 POUNDS. SO A GAIN A 5 FOR THE MESA
THUNDERBIRDS, BRINGS UP A 3RD DOWN AND 5. RICEDORFF TO THE AIR WHERE
HE HAS THROWN FOR OVER 1400 YARDS THROUGH
THE 1ST 4 GAMES. AND HE’S GOING TO BE
DROPPED JUST SHY OF A 1ST DOWN. ZACH OLAGUE, WHO HAD A
STANDOUT GAME LAST WEEK AT PHOENIX COLLEGE, WAS IN ON
THE TACKLE AFTER A GAIN OF 4. AND THEY MAY HAVE TO BRING
THE CHAINS OUT FOR THIS ONE. AND NOW THEY HAVE SIGNALED
THAT THIS IT IS, IN FACT, A 5-YARD GAIN AND A 1ST DOWN FOR
THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. THAT IS THE 1ST 1ST
DOWN OF THE CONTEST. AS WE WIND DOWN TO THE
11:15 MARK IN QUARTER NUMBER ONE. RICEDORFF REALLY USING
THAT PLAY CLOCK AS HE’S WINDING THIS THING
DOWN INSIDE OF 3, 2, 1. HE MIGHT NEED A TIMEOUT. AND THERE’S A DELAY
OF GAME AGAINST MESA. NOT SURE WHAT THE
HESITATION WAS IN SNAPPING THAT BALL, AND MAYBE
RICEDORFF JUST SIMPLY DID NOT LIKE WHAT HE SAW. NONETHELESS, IT IS A DELAY
OF GAME AGAINST THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS, AND IS THEY
ARE LOOKING AT A 1ST AND 15 FROM THEIR
OWN 20-YARD LINE. 0-0 TIE, 1ST
QUARTER ACTION. THEY’LL WORK OUT
OF THE SHOTGUN. AND THE QUICK, HOT READ IS
GOING TO BE CAUGHT ON THAT FAR SIDE. THAT’S THE 1ST LOOK
FROM THE QUARTERBACK. AND MAKING THE CATCH ON
THE FAR SIDE IS AARON MOLINA THE SOPHOMORE
OUT OF ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO. AND A PICK UP OF
5 YARDS ON THE PLAY. AND IT BRINGS UP
2ND DOWN AND 10. MESA TO SEND SONNIE
RICHARDSON IN MOTION. AND NOW DARIUS AGUIRRE. AND RIGHT NOW MESA JUST
SEEMS LIKE THERE IS SOME CONFUSION ON THIS OFFENSE. PLAY CLOCK DOWN TO 10. RICEDORFF HAS THROWN 15
TOUCHDOWN PASSES, ONLY 2 INTERCEPTIONS THIS YEAR,
SETS UP A QUICK BUBBLE SCREEN. AND SCOTTSDALE DID A VERY,
VERY NICE JOB OF SNIFFING THAT ONE OUT, LED BY
MARQUISE CLAYTON, THE 6’1, 308 POUNDER OUT OF
DETROIT, MICHIGAN. SO ABOUT A YARD GAIN
ON THE PLAY, UP TO THE 26-YARD LINE. AND IT’S 3RD DOWN AND 9. NOW THEY’VE MOVED IT UP
A LITTLE BIT TO THE 27. 3RD DOWN AND 8. RYAN FELKER LOOKING ON,
THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, AND, BOY, HE’S MADE THIS
MESA TEAM A JUGGERNAUT. HE’S HAD SOME OF THE
HIGHEST PASSERS IN PASSER RATINGS FROM HIS
QUARTERBACKS OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. INCLUDING BLAKE KEMP, WHO
SET ALL OF THOSE RECORDS HERE A COUPLE
OF YEARS AGO. AS RICEDORFF COMPLETES
THE PASS TO DIONTE SYKES. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT
WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS MESA TEAM, THEY ARE PEPPERED
WITH A LOT OF PLAYERS FROM THAT CHANDLER PROGRAM. SHAUN AGUANO TEAM HAS
TRULY BEEN ONE OF THE ELITE TEAMS AT THE HIGH
SCHOOL LEVEL IN THIS STATE OVER THE LAST
COUPLE OF YEARS. AS THEY SCREEN IT
OUT TO RICHARDSON. AND RICHARDSON PICKS
UP 9 ON THE PLAY. AND HE’S ALL THE WAY
UP TO THE 44-YARD LINE. GAIN OF 8. 9 MINUTES ON THE CLOCK. 2ND DOWN AND 2 FOR MESA. THEY GO TO A NO-HUDDLE
OFFENSE HERE. 1ST QUARTER ACTION,
AND SCORELESS. RICEDORFF THROWS AND LED
HIS RECEIVER JUST A TAD. AND THAT WAS DIONTE SYKES,
WHO HAD A TREMENDOUS CAREER AT CHANDLER. AND HE MADE A GREAT
CATCH FOR A 1ST DOWN. AND LET’S SEND IT DOWN
TO ASHLEY NEVEL SIDELINE. HI, JEFF. AS WE’VE SEEN RATHEN
RICEDORFF WAS ABLE TO RUN THE FOOTBALL. HE’S ALSO ABLE TO MAKE
ALL THE RIGHT PLAYS. AND WHEN I TALKED TO RYAN
FELKER, HE CALLS HIM A CREATOR. THOSE KIND OF QUARTERBACKS
ARE HARD TO FIND, BUT HE’S HAPPY HE HAS HIM HERE. AND WE’RE SEEING HIM MAKE SOME
EXCELLENT PLAYS TONIGHT. BACK TO YOU. ALL RIGHT, ASHLEY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. 1ST QUARTER ACTION, WE
GOT AN INJURY ON THE FIELD WITH 8:50, SCORELESS
TIE, SCOTTSDALE AND MESA. SCORELESS TIE BETWEEN 2
HIGH-POTENT OFFENSES HERE IN 2016 IN THE WESTERN
STATES FOOTBALL LEAGUE. JEFF LOWERY WITH ASHLEY
NEVEL, NATIONAL JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND MCTV. A 3RD DOWN AND
2 HERE FOR MESA. AGUIRRE GOES IN MOTION
TO THE FAIR SIDE. RICEDORFF TAKES THE NECK-HIGH
SNAP AND THROWS INCOMPLETE. NOW, THE SHORT GAME, THE
UNDERNEATH PASSING GAME HERE FOR MESA, HAS BEEN
STRUGGLING HERE IN THE EARLIER STAGES. YOU TALK ABOUT THIS
QUARTERBACK IN RATHEN RICEDORFF LISTED AT 6’1
200 POUNDS OUT OF THE SHOW LOW, ARIZONA, IN HIS
SOPHOMORE YEAR, SUFFERED AN INJURY LAST YEAR. THIS TEAM WAS ROLLING
EARLY ON, BUT HE SUFFERED AN INJURY. AND THE TEAM REALLY
STRUGGLED THEREAFTER — AS HE ROLLS OUT, THROWS ON
RUN, DANGEROUS PASS, BUT THERE IS A WIDE-OPEN
RECEIVER AT THE SCOTTSDALE 20. AND HE CONNECTS WITH
CONNOR ANDERSON, THE FRESHMAN OUT
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO. 1ST DOWN FOR THE MESA
THUNDERBIRDS AS THEY CONNECT ON A PASS
PLAY OF 42 YARDS. LET’S CHECK THIS AGAIN. THE 6’5, 215 POUNDER
HAULING THIS ONE IN, BUT THIS PLAY WAS MADE BY THE
LEGS AS MUCH AS THE ARM OF RATHEN RICEDORFF. SO THAT WILL BRING
UP 1ST DOWN AND TEN. AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME
EITHER TEAM HAS BEEN IN THE OPPONENT SIDE OF THE
FIELD, PLUS TERRITORY. AND THE QUARTERBACK, FLUSH
BACKWARDS, AND HAS TO THROW OFF HIS BACK FOOT,
WHICH IS A USUALLY A DISASTER PLAY, BUT THIS
TIME HE THREW IT A LITTLE SHORT. AND IT WAS THE PRESSURE APPLIED
BY CHRIS JULES, 6’1, 216. LET’S SEND IT BACK
DOWN TO ASHLEY NEVEL. SO AS WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
RATHEN RICEDORFF, WE CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THIS GUY,
RYAN FELKER SAID THAT HE HAD FIVE DIFFERENT COLLEGE
CALL HIM AND ASK MORE ABOUT HIM: LOUISIANA,
LAFAYETTE, UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, UC
DAVIS, AND MONTANA. IF HE CONTINUES THIS KIND
OF PLAY, WE CAN EXPECT HIM TO BE AT A REALLY
GOOD SCHOOL NEXT YEAR. A DIVISION ONE SCHOOL IS
LOOKING AT HIM, AS YOU SAY. AND, YOU KNOW, BEING 6’1,
— AS MESA COMES OUT ON 2ND DOWN AND THROWS
INCOMPLETE, NOW BRINGING UP A 3RD AND TEN. BUT, YOU KNOW, MOST OF
THOSE DIVISION I SCHOOLS, THEY’RE LOOKING AT THE
6’4, 6’5 PROTOTYPICAL BODY PASSING THE EYE TEST, BUT,
YOU KNOW, THE MATURITY THAT THIS YOUNG MAN HAS,
I MEAN, IT’S ALMOST LIKE HAVING A JUNIOR COLLEGE
PEYTON MANNING OUT THERE. HE’S SO INTELLIGENT. AND OFTEN TIMES WHEN RYAN
FELKER SENDS IN A PLAY AND IT ENDS UP BEING THE WRONG
PLAY, HE MAKES IT INTO THE RIGHT PLAY. 3RD DOWN AND 10. GOING FOR THE END ZONE. ONE-ON-ONE COVERAGE,
AND GOING UP FOR IT, AND MAKING A SPECTACULAR CATCH, THE
CHANDLER DIONTE SYKES. GOOD FOR 20 YARDS. AND MESA IS ON THE
BOARD, LEADING IT 6-0. SO DIONTE SYKES WITH
A TREMENDOUS PLAY. WELL, IT ALL STARTS WITH
THE OUTSTANDING PASS PROTECTION IN THE POCKET
BY THE MESA FRONTLINE. SO THAT COMES AT THE
7:51 MARK HERE IN QUARTER NUMBER ONE. AND IT IS 6-0, MESA. AND BUSTILLOS’S EXTRA
POINT IS UP, AND IT IS GOOD. AND IT’S 7-0. 7: 51 ON THE CLOCK. YOU’RE WATCHING
MCTV SPORTS. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE BACK HERE AT JOHN
BRIGGS STADIUM ON THE CAMPUS OF MESA COMMUNITY
COLLEGE AND A VERY IMPRESSIVE DRIVE, 85 YARDS ON 9
PLAYS BY THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. AND THEY DRAW 1ST
BLOOD AND LEAD IT 7-0. ON A 20-YARD TOUCHDOWN
PASS, RICEDORFF TO DIONTE SYKES. AND NOW SCOTTSDALE ON THE
RETURN, AND A BIG HOLD ON THE REVERSE TO
THE NEARSIDE. AND THIS IS BAIN. BAIN OUT OF KELLIS HIGH
SCHOOL IN GLENDALE, ARIZONA. AND HE’S IN PLUS
TERRITORY, A VERY IMPRESSIVE RETURN ON THE
REVERSE, ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE 42-YARD LINE. THERE IS A PENALTY MARKER BACK
AT THE 23 OF SCOTTSDALE. AND THIS ONE MAY VERY
WELL BE COMING BACK. SO IT WILL BE HOLDING
AGAINST THE RETURN TEAM. SCOTTSDALE IN THE ALL
WHITE UNIFORMS WITH THE GREEN LETTERING. AND, OF COURSE, MESA IN THE ALL
RED WITH THE WHITE LETTERING. SO 7:39 HERE TO PLAY,
1ST QUARTER ACTION. SCOTTSDALE BRINGING THEIR
OFFENSE BACK OUT ON TO THE FIELD. THIS WILL BE THEIR 2ND
POSSESSION OF THE GAME. LED BY THE BIG CENTER
CARLOS TURNER ALL 330 POUNDS OF HIM
FROM LAYTON, UTAH. ANDREW BUNCH, A NATIVE OUT
OF THE TENNESSEE, WORKS OUT OF THE SHOTGUN,
ROLLING OUT RIGHT, BUT MOST LIKELY A FALSE START
AGAINST THE OFFENSE WITH 7:38 LEFT TO PLAY HERE IN
THE 1ST QUARTER, BUT THE OFFICIALS WILL TALK
THINGS OVER FIRST. THE OFFENSIVE FRONTLINE
— DEFENSE OFF SIDES WITH CONTACT, 5 YARD,
FIRST DOWN. SO A 5-YARD PLENTY WILL
MOVE IT UP TO ABOUT THE 22-YARD LINE. SO SCOTTSDALE WILL MIGHT
VERY WELL HAVE A FREE PLAY HERE ON THE
1ST DOWN AND 5. OFFICIALS BEING
VERY TECHNICAL. THEY HAVE ASKED THE
SCOREKEEPER TO MOVE THE CLOCK BACK ONE SECOND. SO 7:38 IS ON THE
CLOCK RIGHT NOW. AND THEY’RE GOING TO
MAKE THEM TURN IT BACK A SECOND. OFFENSIVE FRONTLINE, LED
BY AUSTIN ROSS, ANOTHER 300-PLUS POUNDER. WENT TO SKYLINE
HIGH SCHOOL. HIS HOMETOWN OUT
OF LAS VEGAS. AND THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE
TO DO A MUCH BETTER JOB THIS WEEK PROTECTING THIS
GUY, ANDREW BUNCH, OUT OF INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL
HERE IN ARIZONA, BUT HE IS A TENNESSEE NATIVE,
6’0, 187 POUND FRESHMAN. AND I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED
WITH HIM LAST WEEK IN A LOSING CAUSE. A 1-POINT LOSS FOR
SCOTTSDALE OVER THE NATIONALLY RANKED
PHOENIX COLLEGE. IT WAS A 2-POINT LOSS
IN LAST WEEK’S GAME. IN FACT, SCOTTSDALE —
DOUG MADOSKI SAID, YOU KNOW, WE MAY VERY WELL BE THE
BEST 0-4 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. THEY’VE HAD VERY MUCH —
THEY’VE HAD CLOSE GAMES EACH AND EVERY WEEK. THEIR WORST LOSS WAS 38-31
AT THE HANDS OF PHOENIX COLLEGE IN THEIR FIRST
MATCH UP — RUN UP THE GUT, WITH THE LEAD
BLOCKING OF AMIR LUCKETT OUT OF THE
SURPRISE, ARIZONA. AND SCOTTSDALE WILL NOW BE
FACING A 2ND DOWN AND 3. SO AGAIN, THEY MAYBE TAKE
A SHOT DOWN FIELD, AS TEAMS OFTEN DO IN
THESE SITUATIONS. 2ND DOWN AND 3. ALL RESTING RIGHT
AROUND 20-YARD LINE. AND THE PASS IS COMPLETE
TO THE FAR SIDE. AND THAT’S GOING TO NET
THEM A 1ST DOWN AS ALEX JACKSON JR. WHO HAS TO
CONTINUE TO PLAY STELLER IF HE IS —
DOWN TO ASHLEY. SO THEY’VE ACTUALLY MADE
A LOT CHANGES IN PRACTICE THIS PAST WEEK, WHEN I
TALKED TO DOUG MADOSKI. THEY’RE STARTING TO LISTEN
TO A LOT MORE MUSIC TO GET THEM PUMPED. IT’S OBVIOUSLY
WORKING HERE TONIGHT. YOU SEE THEM, THEY’RE OFF
TO A LITTLE BIT OF A SLOW START, BUT
THEY’RE MOTIVATED. THEY ARE DEFINITELY
IN THIS GAME. AND, YOU KNOW, THEY ARE
ARE NOT GOING TO GO OUT WITHOUT A FIGHT. ALL RIGHT, ASHLEY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. 6:40 LEFT TO GO LEFT TO
GO HERE IN THE FIRST. MESA SCORED ON THEIR LAST
DRIVE, A 20-YARD PASS PLAY TO DIONTE SYKES TO TAKE
THE FIRST LEAD OF THE CONTEST. A BOBBLE PASS, AND JOHNNY
JOHNSON MAKES THE PLAY, MADE THE CATCH NEAR
MIDFIELD, AND GETS IT INTO THE PLUS TERRITORY. AND NOW A LATE
FLAG IS COMING IN. AND THIS MAY VERY WELL BE
GOING AGAINST THE VISITING SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING
ARTICHOKES. EITHER A LATE HIT,
UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT. JOHNNY JOHNSON LOOKED SO
GOOD IN LAST WEEK’S GAME. AND AGAIN, YOU GIVE BUNCH TIME,
AND HE’S VERY DANGEROUS. LET’S GET THE CALL. AFTER THE PLAY, DEAD BALL,
UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS, SCOTTSDALE NUMBER 3,
15-YARD PENALTY, THE RESULT OF THE PLAY
IS A FIRST DOWN. THAT WAS AGAINST SALVATORE
CANNELLA, WHO IS THEIR HIGHLY-TALENTED TIGHT END
WHO PLAYED MAINLY AT WIDE RECEIVER LAST WEEK,
CREATES A LOT OF MISMATCHES AND THE
OPPOSING DEFENSE, 6’5, 222 POUNDER OUT
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. BUT HE GETS HIT FOR AN
UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT. AND NOW SCOTTSDALE WILL GO
SPREAD OFFENSE HERE ON 1ST DOWN AS THE BALL IS PLACED
BACK AT THE 37-YARD LINE. BUNCH ON THE BOOTLEG. AND HE’S GOING TO
BE WRAPPED UP ON A QUARTERBACK SACK. AND IT WAS OUTSEY, AGAIN,
HIS FIRST FULL SACK. ONE AND A HALF CREDITED TO HIM
SO FAR IN THIS FIRST QUARTER. 250 POUNDER OUT OF THE
SOMERSET, NEW JERSEY. SO THAT MOVES HIM BACK
TO THE 29-YARD LINE. AND THEIR MIGHT HAVE BEEN
A LITTLE BIT OF CONFUSION BACK THERE. PRIOR TO THE SNAP BY
THE SCOTTSDALE OFFENSE. MICAH REED-CAMPOS FLANKING
HIS QUARTERBACK TO ANDREW BUNCH’S LEFT. 2ND DOWN AND 18. BUNCH STEPS UP
IN THE POCKET. NOW ROLLS OUT. AND HE’S GOING TO BE
TRIPPED NEAR THE 24-YARD LINE. THE BALL COMES LOSE. AND IT’S GOING TO PICKED
UP HERE BY THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS ALL THE
WAY INTO THE END ZONE. AND A TOUCHDOWN. JAMES VAIFALE, THE 6’2,
206 POUNDER, ANOTHER CHANDLER NATIVE OUT
OF CORONA DEL SOL HIGH SCHOOL, RUNS IN IT. AND MESA ADDS
ON TO THE LEAD. THE TOUCHDOWN IS
GOING TO STAND. BUNCH GOT OUT
OF THE POCKET. AND THEN HE JUST
SIMPLY LOST IT. IN FACT, I THINK WHAT HE
DID WAS TRIED TO USE THE BALL TO BRACE THE FALL
AS THE BALL CAME OUT. AND VAIFALE RUNS IT IN
FROM 23 YARDS OUT ON A FUMBLE RECOVERY. AND MESA HAS DONE IT AGAIN
HERE IN THE FIRST WITH 5:13 LEFT TO GO HERE IN QUARTER
NUMBER ONE. BUSTILLOS. AND OUT OF THE HOLD OF
RYAN GRIMM, THE STARTING PUNTER. AND THE KICK IS GOOD. 5:13 LEFT TO GO. MESA WITH A 14-0
FIRST QUARTER LEAD. WELL, IT’S A BEAUTIFUL
NIGHT HERE FOR NATIONAL JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL
ON MCTV SPORTS, THOUGH OUR GAME TEMPERATURE
ABOUT 95 DEGREES. AND IT’S QUITE MUGGY HERE
IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN, PHOENIX, ARIZONA, MORE
SPECIFICALLY, MESA. SCOTTSDALE WILL
RETURN THIS ONE. AND IT LOOKED LIKE THEY
RAN INTO EACH OTHER, THEIR OWN PLAYER, AND SCOTTSDALE
HAS COUGHED IT UP. AND MESA WILL HAVE IT JUST
A COUPLE OF YARDS FROM THE END ZONE. AND AN ANOTHER TREMENDOUS
DEFENSIVE PLAY TURNED IN BY THIS MESA DEFENSE OR IN
THIS CASE SPECIAL TEAMS. ELMANDO MCCOY, YOUNG MAN
OUT OF VALLEY VISTA HIGH SCHOOL. AND WITH 5:05 LEFT TO GO
AND ABOUT A SHORT OF FIELD AS YOU’RE EVER
GOING TO GET. BOY, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT,
I DON’T KNOW, DID YOU GIVE CREDIT ON THE TACKLE TO
BAIN, WHO TACKLED HIS OWN GUY AND DAVID
MCGRIFF, WHOSE FATHER IS FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE
GREAT FRED MCGRIFF. SO IT’S GOAL TO GO
FROM INSIDE THE 3. AND THEIR GOING —
STRAIGHT UP THE MIDDLE AND HE’S INTO THE END ZONE.
TOUCHDOWN. AND WELL, THE ROUTE
MAY VERY WELL BE ON. IT’S 20-0 IN FAVOR OF
THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. THAT COMES AT THE 5:01
MARK HERE IN THE FIRST. SO LEGGETT SCORES FROM
A COUPLE OF YARDS OUT. AND NOW BUSTILLLOS IN
TO KICK THE EXTRA POINT. SNAP IS DOWN. THE KICK IS UP. LINE-DRIVE KICK. IT GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE
BACK OF THE THE TRACK, IS GOOD. 21-0. LET’S SEND DOWNSTAIRS
TO ASHLEY NEVEL. YEAH, JEFF. SO WHEN I TALKED TO RYAN
FELKER ABOUT HIS DEFENSE ALL HE CAN SAY WAS, WOW. THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE
THAT HE COULD SAY. AND OBVIOUSLY THEY’RE
PLAYING EXCELLENT TONIGHT. BUT ALSO DOUG MADOSKI KNEW
COMING INTO IS GAME THAT THIS WAS GOING TO BE ONE
OF THE HARDEST MATCHUPS. AND IT IS SHOWING
TONIGHT, WITH 21-0. BACK TO YOU. GOOD POINT, ASHLEY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. ON A HOT, MUGGY EVENING. IT’S OCTOBER 1ST, 2016. AND I THINK MANY OF THE
PEOPLE IN THE MESA CIRCLES UP HERE IN THE
BROADCASTING BOOTH, IN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT,
THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE A VERY CLOSE
GAME HERE TONIGHT. SCOTTSDALE HAS DOMINATED
UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF DOUG MADOSKI, WHO HAS BEEN WITH
THE PROGRAM 13 SEASONS. HE’S BEEN THE HEAD
COACH 11 SEASONS. THIS ONE IS GOING TO GO
DEEP AND INTO THE BACK THE END ZONE. THAT WILL BE A TOUCHBACK. NO CHANCE FOR
TRAIVON CLAYTON. SO SCOTTSDALE WILL COME
OUT WITH THE BALL AT THEIR OWN 20-YARD LINE WITH 5:01
LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE FIRST QUARTER. AND THEY’RE ON THE WRONG
SIDE OF A 21-0 LEDGER. AND WE MENTIONED THIS
DURING OUR PREGAME SHOW THAT MESA IS A TEAM,
THEY’RE ONE OF THE LONGEST RUNNING FOOTBALL
PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTRY. THEY’VE BEEN AROUND
FOR SO MANY YEARS. AND, YOU KNOW, THEY REALLY
VALUE THEIR HISTORY HERE AT MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE,
BUT AFTER THEY WON THE VALLEY OF THE SUN BOWL
BACK IN 2007 AGAINST FORT SCOTT ON A
RAIN-DRENCHED DAY. THE PRIOR DAY,
THE SUN CAME OUT. AND THE SUN CAME OUT AND
SHINED ON MESA THAT DAY. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME
THEY WON A MAJOR BOWL GAME. BUT SINCE THEN THEY HAD AT
ONE TIME SIX — OR AT ONE PERIOD OF TIME, SIX
DIFFERENT COACHES IN, LIKE, A SIX-YEAR SPAN. SCOTTSDALE COMES OUT
RUNNING THE BALL. AND THAT’S
LADARRIUS THOMAS. THEN RYAN FELKER CAME
IN 2012, AND HIS CAREER RECORD IS 25-21 IN HIS
FIFTH SEASON HERE AT MESA. AND YOU SAY, WELL, THAT
MAY NOT BE ALL THAT SPECTACULAR, BUT I GOT TO
TELL YOU, FROM WHERE THIS PROGRAM WAS FIVE SEASONS
AGO AND WHERE IT IS NOW, I THINK HE’S DONE — HE
AND HIS STAFF HAVE DONE A REMARKABLE JOB, ALONG
WITH JOHN THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. 2ND DOWN AND 8. AND WE GOT A NEW
QUARTERBACK IN. WE SAW QUITE A BIT OF PLAY
FROM CEDRIC BROOKS, MAYBE NOT THE POCKET PASSER THAT
ANDREW BUNCH, IS BUT THIS A YOUNG MAN THAT CERTAINLY
CAN HURT YOU WITH HIS LEGS AND ACTUALLY THREW THE
BALL AT TIMES VERY WELL LAST WEEK, HAD A COUPLE
OF MISTAKES IN THAT GAME. AS THE SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING
ARTICHOKES ARE FACING A 3RD DOWN AND 8 FROM THE
27-YARD LINE 4:07 LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE
OPENING QUARTER. MESA WITH A COUPLE OF
TOUCHDOWNS ON OFFENSE AND ONE VIA A FUMBLE RECOVERY. SO 3RD DOWN AND
8 FROM THE 27. AND THIS IS GOING
TO BE A BROKEN PLAY. AND I’LL TELL YOU, MESA,
EVERYTHING WORKING FOR THEM. AMONAI ITAAEHAU, THE
SOPHOMORE OUT OF DESERT RIDGE,
6’2, 240 POUNDS. DESERT RIDGE, A FINE HIGH
SCHOOL PROGRAM HERE IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN
OUT IN WAY EAST MESA. SO CEDRIC BROOKS COULD NOT
PICK UP THE FIRST DOWN. PUNTING UNIT IS OUT HERE. MACIAS WHO HAS GOT
A VERY STRONG LEG. AND THIS ONE IS GOING TO
TAKE A SCOTTSDALE ROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO ABOUT
THE 25-YARD LINE. SO ANOTHER 53-YARD
PUNT FOR MACIAS. AND HE’S AVERAGING WELL
OVER 40 YARDS A PUNT THIS YEAR. 3:02 LEFT TO GO HERE
IN THE 1ST QUARTER. MESA COMING BACK OUT ON
OFFENSE AND LEADING IT BY A SCORE OF 21-0. YOU GOT TO GIVE A LOT OF
CREDIT TO THE MEN IN THE TRENCHES UP FRONT, ISIAH
MOORE, THE 6’4, 280 POUNDER OUT OF OHIO
LEADING THE WAY, ALONG WITH NUMBER 60, NICK
COURINOS OUT OF SHADOW MOUNTAIN, 320 POUNDS. SO OUT OF THE
SHOTGUN, RICEDORFF. SHOWING BLITZ IS
SCOTTSDALE, AND THEY GO WITH A DRAW PLAY AND
SCOTTSDALE WAS ALL OVER IT. WELL, GETTING IN THERE FOR
THE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES CHRIS JULES ALONG WITH
BOZTON SANDERS. 2ND DOWN AND 14. THEY LOSE 4 ON THAT PLAY. 2:32 ON THE CLOCK. RICEDORFF COMES OUT, QUICK
SCREEN TO THE NEARSIDE, CAUGHT IN THE FLATS. AND THEY’RE GOING TO
GET THE 1ST DOWN HERE. AS THE PASS WAS COMPLETE
TO CLINTON, 235 POUND TIGHT END OUT OF
PRESCOTT, ARIZONA. SO MOVE THE CHAINS, AND
A FRESH SET OF DOWNS FOR MESA, WHO ALREADY LEADS
21-0 WITH 2:20 LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE 1ST. RICEDORFF OUT OF THE
SHOTGUN, A BATTED PASS, AND NEARLY INTERCEPTED
BY CLAYTON OF SCOTTSDALE. AND ONCE AGAIN, IT WAS
CHRIS JULES GETTING IN THERE WITH
TREMENDOUS SPEED. NUMBER 56 ALMOST CAME UP
WITH THAT INTERCEPTION, BUT COULDN’T
QUITE GET THERE. CLAYTON, VITAL PART OF
THAT DEFENSIVE LAST YEAR — OR LAST WEEK AGAINST
PHOENIX COLLEGE. THERE IS A PENALTY
MARKER DOWN. AND THIS IS IN THE
SCOTTSDALE SECONDARY. AND THIS MIGHT BE A HOLD
AGAINST SCOTTSDALE, IF YOU GO BY THE PLACEMENT
OF THAT FLAG. BUT LET’S GET THE CALL
FROM OUR OFFICIALS HERE. AFTER THE PLAY, PERSONAL
FOUL, HANDS TO THE FACE, DEFENSE NUMBER
— 1ST DOWN. SO SCOTTSDALE COMMITTING A
BIG-TIME INFRACTION THERE. AND THAT’S GOING TO MOVE
THE BALL ALL THE WAY UP TOWARDS MIDFIELD. SO IT WILL BE
1ST DOWN AND 10. MESA STILL WORKING INSIDE
THEIR OWN TERRITORY OWNING A 21-0 LEAD WITH 2:13 LEFT
TO GO HERE IN THE 1ST. RATHEN RICEDORFF ATTENDED
HIS HIGH SCHOOL IN SHOW LOW, ARIZONA. IT’S ABOUT 4 HOURS NORTH
OF THE VALLEY OF THE SUN. QUICK SCREEN PASS
OUT TO SYKES. AND SYKES ACROSS THE 40
AND DIVES TO ABOUT THE 35-YARD LINE, A GAIN OF 14
AND A FIRST DOWN FOR MESA. AND THEY’RE MOVING THE
BALL AGAINST, WELL, TO BE QUITE HONEST WITH YOU, A
SCOTTSDALE TEAM THAT IS VERY YOUNG, QUITE A FEW
FRESHMAN ON THE ROSTER. AND HERE AS WE APPROACH
THE MIDWAY POINT OF THE SEASON SOMEWHAT A DEPLETED
STARTING LINEUP FOR COACH DOUG MADOSKI’S DEFENSE. THEY’LL SCREEN
IT OUT AGAIN. SYKES, THE 6’4 COMPETITOR. AND I’LL TELL YOU, THE
TALENT THAT THIS MESA TEAM HAS, I MEAN, WITH THE ALL
THE LOCAL TALENT, IT’S — YOU CAN SEE WHY THIS MESA
TEAM IS GOING TO BE A TOUGH ONE TO RECKON WITH
THE REST OF THE WAY. THEY’VE HAD SOME
BIG VICTORIES. THEY’VE ALREADY
BEATEN EASTERN, WHICH TRADITIONALLY
IS A GOOD TEAM. THEY BEAT THE NUMBER ONE
RANKED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO UP
IN UTAH, SNOW COLLEGE. ONE-ON-ONE COVERAGE, FAR
SIDE, AND A SPECTACULAR TWO-HANDED CATCH AS HE
HAULS IT IN NEAR THE 10-YARD LINE. AND IT DOESN’T GET
ANY BETTER THAN THAT. DESHAWN JONES OUT OF
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, WENT UP OVER THE CORNER
AND MAKES THE CATCH. SO DESHAWN JONES WITH
A TREMENDOUS PLAY. PLENTY OF TIME ON THE
PLAY CLOCK ON 1ST DOWN AND GOAL, JUST INSIDE THE
SCOTTSDALE 10-YARD LINE, WITH A MINUTE
LEFT TO PLAY. RICEDORFF GETTING PRESSURE
FROM THE BEHIND AND NOW THROWS ON THE RUN,
DANGEROUS PASS. IT’S DEFLECTED AND PICKED
OFF 3 YARDS INTO THE END ZONE. A HEADS-UP PLAY BY BOZTON
SANDERS, WHO WON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
AT CENTENNIAL. HE’LL BRING IT OUT A
RETURN CLOSE TO 25 YARDS. AND THAT IS OUR SECOND
TURNOVER OF THE GAME. THE FIRST ONE LED TO A
MESA SCORE, BUT SANDERS COMES UP WITH AN INT HERE
WITH 51 SECONDS LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE FIRST FOR
SCOTTSDALE, AS THEY TRAIL IT 21-0. SOMETIMES IT’S BETTER TO
BE LUCKY THAN GOOD, AND THAT MAY HAVE BEEN THE
SITUATION THERE WITH SANDERS. THAT BALL WAS DEFLECTED
RIGHT AROUND THE GOAL LINE. AND THAT WAS A SITUATION
YOU WON’T SEE VERY OFTEN WITH RATHEN RICEDORFF,
THE QUARTERBACK FOR MESA. HE WAS TRYING TO FORCE
THAT ONE IN THERE. AND UNFORTUNATELY, FOR HIM, THE
END RESULT WAS AN INTERCEPTION. AND NOW SCOTTSDALE REALLY
NEEDING TO GET A SCORE HERE AS THEY
TRAIL IT 21-0. BUNCH IS BACK IN THERE AND
THROWING HIGH AND INCOMPLETE. REMEMBER THE LAST SERIES
ON OFFENSE FOR SCOTTSDALE WAS RUN BY THEIR BACKUP
QUARTERBACK CEDRIC BROOKS, AS THE PASS WAS INTEND
FOR JOHNNY JOHNSON. SO IT WILL BRING
UP A 2ND DOWN. MESA HAS LOOKED GOOD. ONE OF THE KEYS HERE
TONIGHT I THINK FOR MESA HAS BEEN THEIR ABILITY
TO GET BACK INTO THE BACKFIELD AND PUT PRESSURE
ON THIS QUARTERBACK. IF YOU GIVE ANDREW
BUNCH, IF YOU GIVE ANY QUARTERBACK TIME,
OBVIOUSLY THEIR CHANCES OF SUCCESS ARE A LOT BETTER,
BUT THE SCOTTSDALE OFFENSIVE LINE HAS TO BE
A GOOD JOB, AND THIS TIME THEY DO. THEY CONTAIN THE BOX. HE ROLLS OUT RIGHT. AND HOOKS UP WITH ALEX
JACKSON JR. FOR A 1ST DOWN. SO MOVE THE CHAINS AFTER
A 13-YARD PICK UP TO THE 35-YARD LINE. 1ST DOWN AND 10 FOR
THE SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES, WHO COME IN
HERE WITH A RECORD OF 0- 4, COMING OFF A 31-29 LOSS
AT THE HANDS OF NATIONALLY RANKED PHOENIX COLLEGE,
WHO COMES INTO THIS WEEK’S ACTION RANKED 12TH. AND OF COURSE, SNOW
COLLEGE UP IN THERE IN THE TOP TEN STILL, EVEN THOUGH
THEY HELD THE NUMBER-ONE SPOT FOR A WHILE. AND I WOULD BE REMISS IF
I DIDN’T MENTION ARIZONA WESTERN, WHAT A JUGGERNAUT
OUT IN YUMA, ARIZONA, THAT TEAM IS. AS WE GO TO THE END
OF QUARTER NUMBER ONE. WE’LL TALK ABOUT ARIZONA
WESTERN AND BRING YOU BACK TO THE ACTION, AS QUARTER
NUMBER TWO, RIGHT AFTER THIS ON MCTV SPORTS. WE’RE BACK IN MESA. AND THE MESA COMMUNITY
COLLEGE THUNDERBIRDS WITH A 21-NOTHING LEAD. THEY DOMINATED THAT 1ST. AND THEY GOT SOME HELP BY
A TURNOVER, BUT RIGHT NOW SCOTTSDALE HAS IT. THEY INTERCEPTED THE BALL
IN THEIR OWN END ZONE AND RAN IT OUT TO THE 22. AND NOW A COUPLE OF PLAYS
LATER ANDREW BUNCH COMES OUT THROWING. AND THAT WAS A DEFLECTED
PASS NEAR THE 44-YARD LINE AS IT FALLS INCOMPLETE
DEEP INTO THE SECONDARY. AND ITAAEHAU IS THE ONE
THAT WAS IN THERE TO KNOCK THAT BALL DOWN. THAT PASS WAS THROWN
BEHIND THE INTENDED TARGET. 3RD DOWN AND 9. 14:55 ON THE CLOCK. POCKET CLOSING IN, BUNCH,
GOOD FOOT WORK, AND THROWS COMPLETE FOR THE 1ST DOWN. LATE PENALTY
MARKER COMING IN. TACKLE WAS MADE BY FORMER
HAMILTON HUSKY AND STATE CHAMPION A COUPLE OF YEARS
AGO, SANTANA STERLING. BUT THE PENALTY IS GOING
AGAINST MESA’S DEFENSE. AND AFTER THE 1ST DOWN
CATCH, YOU CAN TACK ON ANOTHER 15 YARDS. AND THIS IS GOING TO MOVE
THEM INTO PLUS TERRITORY NEAR THE 39-YARD
LINE OF MESA. SCOTTSDALE KNOWING THAT
THIS GAME STARTING TO SLIP AWAY, FALLING DOWN
21-NOTHING, KNOWS THAT THEY NEED TO GET
A SCORE HERE. AND RIGHT NOW THEY ARE
MARCHING WITH THE HELP OF THAT PERSONAL FOUL. AND NOW FROM THE 39, 1ST DOWN
AND 10, INSIDE MESA TERRITORY. JOHNNY JOHNSON ON THE
QUICK SCREEN TO THE NEAR SIDE DOESN’T GET MUCH. AND GOOD COVERAGE THERE BY
DARIUS AGUIRRE — OR CHECK THAT. RODNEY CARR. RODNEY CARR, THE SOPHOMORE
OUT OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, PUSHED HIM OUT
OF BOUNDS AFTER A SHORT YARDAGE GAME. ABOUT TWO AND A
HALF ON THE PLAY. BRING UP A 2ND
AND A LONG 7. TRIPS NEAR SIDE. ANDREW BUNCH WITH
LADARRIUS THOMAS. THEY FAKE THE COUNTER. BUNCH ELUDES THE SACK AND
PASS IS COMPLETE TO JOHNNY JOHNSON, WHO IS REALLY AN
OUTSTANDING POSSESSION RECEIVER. AND HE’S GOING TO
BE WRAPPED UP THERE DEFENSIVELY BY MARCUS
BRANTLEY OUT OF RED MOUNTAIN HIGH
SCHOOL IN MESA. DOWN TO ASHLEY NEVEL. YEAH. SO WHEN I TALKED TO
SAL CANNELLA AT SCC’S PRACTICE. AND HE KIND OF TALKED
ABOUT WHAT SEPARATES HIM IS HIS WORK ETHIC,
DETERMINATION. WHEN HE ACTUALLY CAME OUT
OF HIGH SCHOOL, HE HAD ZERO OFFERS. HE DID NOT PLAY FOOTBALL
HIS JUNIOR YEAR, WHICH WAS A REALLY BIG RECRUITING
ERROR, AND HE ADMITS THAT. HE WAS A BASKETBALL
PLAYER, AND HE FOUND OUT THAT HE’D BE MORE
SUCCESSFUL PLAYING FOOTBALL IN THE LONG RUN. SO HE WORKED OUT TWICE A
DAY, PUT ON 30 POUNDS LAST YEAR, AND HE JUST
COMPLETELY CHANGED HIS ENTIRE MINDSET. I MEAN, WE’RE NOT SEEING
THAT REALLY TONIGHT WITH THE ERROR THAT HE MADE IN
SCC’S POSSESSION IN THE 1ST QUARTER, BUT HE’S DONE A LOT
SO FAR FOR THEM THIS SEASON. HE’S BECOME A
REALLY BIG LEADER. AND HE’S REALLY DONE A
LOT SINCE HE’S BEEN ON THE TEAM, LAST YEAR AS WELL. BACK TO YOU. ABSOLUTELY, ASHLEY. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. AND JAMEER OUTSEY, WHO IS
SETTING UP CAMP IN THIS SCOTTSDALE BACK FIELD,
GETS ANOTHER QUARTERBACK SACK. HE’S BEEN CREDITED WITH
TWO AND A HALF, AND WE’RE ONLY A COUPLE OF MINUTES
INTO QUARTER NUMBER TWO. AND THAT FORCES SCOTTSDALE
WHO HAD A NICE LITTLE DRIVE GOING, BUT A
BEND-BUT-DON’T-BREAK DEFENSE FOR MESA
FORCES THE PUNT. MACIAS, AND A TOWERING
PUNT THAT LANDS 6 FEET INTO THE END ZONE — 6
YARDS INTO THE END ZONE. AND THAT WILL BE A
TOUCHBACK WITH 12:46 LEFT TO GO. AND MESA LEADING IT BY
A SCORE OF 21-NOTHING. WE’RE BACK IN MESA 12:46
LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE 1ST HALF. AND MESA WITH A 21-NOTHING
LEAD, AND THEY HAVE THE BALL. AND THIS TIME SCOTTSDALE,
WHO HAS DONE A NICE JOB BETWEEN THE TACKLES HERE
TONIGHT DEFENSIVELY LOREN JOHNSTON, 240 POUNDER
OUT OF THOUSAND OAKS, CALIFORNIA, IN THEIR
1ST FOR THE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES. AND THAT WILL GO FOR ABOUT
A 2–YARD LOSS, BRINGING UP 2ND DOWN AND 12. 12:15 ON THE CLOCK. RICEDORFF HAS THROWN
FOR ONE TOUCHDOWN. AND HE THROWS OVER THE
MIDDLE, FINDING HIS TIGHT END, CONNOR ANDERSON, WHO
WAS GREETED IMMEDIATELY, LANDED ON HIS BACK AND
LANDED ON HIS HEAD; LOOKED LIKE THE BACK OF HIS HEAD
REALLY SLAMMED THE TURF HERE AT MESA COMMUNITY
COLLEGE QUITE HARD. AND WITH 12:04 LEFT TO GO. AND REALLY IT WAS NOT A
HARD TACKLE BY OLAGUE. IT WAS JUST THE FACT THAT
ANDERSON WENT UP HIGH TO GET THAT PASS FROM
RICEDORFF AND WAS CERTAINLY OFF BALANCE. IT SEEMS LIKE
HE’S ALL RIGHT. HE MAY SIT OUT
A PLAY HERE. AS RYAN FELKER, THE HEAD
COACH, AND THE REST OF THE TRAINING STAFF COMES OUT
TO WALK HIM OFF THE FIELD. THEY RULE THE
PASS INCOMPLETE. IT LOOKED LIKE HE CAME
UP WITH IT INITIALLY. AND SO NOW IT’S 3RD
DOWN AND 12 FOR THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. 12:04 AND THE CLOCK STOPS
WITH THE INCOMPLETE PASS. SPREAD OFFENSE, SCOTTSDALE
OFFSIDES, THE ONLY QUESTION IS WERE
THEY DRAWN OFF? MANY TIMES YOU’LL SEE
THAT LINE JUDGE MOTION. THIS IS GOING TO BE
AGAINST THE DEFENSE. SO A 5-YARD PENALTY. NOW IT’S GOING TO BE A 2ND
DOWN AND 7 AS THEY MOVE THE BALL UP TO THE 23-YARD
LINE AFTER THE OFFSIDES PENALTY AGAINST
SCOTTSDALE’S DEFENSE. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THESE
OFFICIALS ARE PLAYING IT KIND OF SAFE AND THEY
WANT TO CONFER BEFORE THEY OFFICIALLY MAKE THE CALL. SO 12:03 ON THE CLOCK. MESA WITH 21 UNANSWERED
POINTS IN THE 1ST QUARTER. AND SCOTTSDALE JUST TRYING
TO GET AN ANSWER AND TRYING TO GET THE BALL
BACK HERE ON 3RD DOWN AND 7. RICEDORFF WITH A QUICK
PASS, AND IT’S INCOMPLETE, AND IT WAS BROKEN UP IN
THE FLATS, ONE-ON-ONE COVERAGE WITH LUMLEY. I’LL TELL YOU WHAT, IF
LUMLEY DOESN’T BREAK THAT BALL UP, THERE’S A VERY
GOOD CHANCE AARON MOLINA WOULD HAVE RUN QUITE AWAY. SO IT WILL BRING UP
A 4TH DOWN AND 7. AND I THINK THIS, IN FACT,
IS THE 1ST TIME THAT MESA IS PUNTING. SECOND TIME THEY ARE
PUNTING HERE TONIGHT. DION MARTINEZ IS BACK TO
RECEIVE, STANDING AT HIS OWN 37-YARD LINE. THIS IS GRIMM WITH THE
LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, THE 23-YARD LINE. AND A 41-YARD
PUNT, NO RETURN. SO A GOOD PUNT. AND SCOTTSDALE ALMOST IN A
MUST-SCORE SITUATION HERE. THEY NEED TO GET
SOME MOMENTUM. THEY’VE KIND OF SPUTTERED BOTH
OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY. AND SCOTTSDALE IN THE ALL
WHITE UNIFORMS TRAILING THE HOME TEAM
MESA, 21-NOTHING. SO IT IS A HOT,
MUGGY NIGHT. 95 DEGREES HERE
IN MESA, ARIZONA. 21-NOTHING IN FAVOR
OF THE THUNDERBIRDS. OFF TO ONE OF THEIR BEST
STARTS IN RECENT YEARS. AND THEY ARE ONE OF THREE
TEAMS IN THE WESTERN STATE’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE
THAT IS UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE PLAY. PHOENIX COLLEGE AND
ARIZONA WESTERN AND ANOTHER SMOTHERING
DEFENSIVE PLAY. THIS IS SHAQUILLE
GROSVENOR OUT OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY. NO GAIN ON THE PLAY IT,
AND IT BRINGS UP 2ND DOWN AND 10. SCOTTSDALE TRAILING
21-NOTHING AS THEY CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE
HERE ON AN OFFENSE. ANDREW BUNCH, THE
SCOTTSDALE QUARTERBACK, HAD A FINE GAME LAST
WEEK AGAINST PC. HE THROWS AND A DROP PASS. IT WAS A LITTLE HIGH, BUT
IT WAS THE PRESSURE OF KENNY STEELE OUT
OF TAMPA, FLORIDA. HE WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL OUT
IN TOLLESON, WHICH IS JUST DOWN THE I-10, WEST
OF DOWNTOWN PHOENIX. AND KENNETH STEELE REALLY
LAID THE THUNDER THAT TIME DOWN IN THE FLATS. INCOMPLETE PASS BRINGS
UP A 3RD DOWN AND 10 WITH 11:16 LEFT TO GO
HERE IN THE 1ST HALF. SO A BIG 3RD DOWN HERE FOR
THE SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES TRYING TO GET
BACK INTO THIS BALL GAME. PRESSURE ON THE
QUARTERBACK, AND HERE HE GOES, ANOTHER SACK. THAT IS THE 5TH
SACK OF THE DAY. ELIJAH JEFFCOAT. WE MENTIONED IT AT THE TOP
OF THE BROADCAST THAT IF SCOTTSDALE’S GOING TO HAVE
SUCCESS HERE TONIGHT ON THE OFFENSIVE END, THEY’VE
GOT TO DO A MUCH BETTER JOB IN PROTECTING
THE QUARTERBACK. AND NOTHING YOU
CAN DO THERE. ELIJAH JEFFCOAT TOOK THE
INSIDE TRACK AND LITERALLY PUSHED THAT RIGHT
TACKLE OUT OF THE PLAY. AND WHAT TURNED OUT TO
BE A RELATIVELY EASY QUARTERBACK SACK FOR
THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. NEARLY BLOCKED, AS MACIAS
PUTS A JOLT INTO THIS ONE. IT’S GOING TO BE
CAUGHT BACK AT THE 25. ANOTHER 45-YARDER. HE’S AT A COUPLE FROM 53. AND WITH 10:28 LEFT TO GO
HERE, 2ND QUARTER ACTION, THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS
LEAD IT 21-NOTHING. RUNNING STRAIGHT
AHEAD IS MESA ON 1ST DOWN AND 10. MESA STARTING THIS DRIVE
AT THEIR OWN 25-YARD LINE. A VERY SUCCESSFUL 1ST
QUARTER, WHERE THEY OUTSCORED SCOTTSDALE
21-NOTHING, THOUGH WE’VE SEEN A SCORELESS
2ND QUARTER. AND AFTER THE RUN BY C.J. LEGGETT, A GAIN OF 6 ON
THE PLAY BRINGS UP A 2ND DOWN AND 4. JUST UNDER THE 10-MINUTE
MARK HERE, QUARTER TWO. MESA TRYING TO GO TO
4-1 ON THE SEASON. THEY COME IN HERE WITH A
RECORD IN CONFERENCE AT 3-0. THEY LOST BY ONE TO
PHOENIX COLLEGE EARLY IN THE SEASON. C.J. ON A BIG SWEEP TO THE NEAR
SIDE TAKES ON A DEFENDER AS HE LOWERS HIS PADS. AND PEDRO ON THE TACKLE,
BUT NOT BEFORE THEY PICK UP THE 1ST DOWN. THEY’LL MARK THE BALL. LET’S SEE, THEY’RE GOING
TO MARK THE BALL RIGHT AT THE 37-YARD LINE. SO A GAIN OF 6. AND I’LL TELL YOU WHAT,
YOU LOOK AT THE LOWER BODY STRENGTH OF C.J. LEGGETT, AND I’LL TELL
YOU, YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE ON THE RECEIVING END. BUT DOING A GOOD JOB THERE
WAS ISAIAH PEDRO COMING UP FROM HIS CORNER POSITION
TO THE NEAR SIDE. SO IT’S 1ST DOWN AND 10
WITH THE BALL RESTING AT THEIR OWN 37-YARD LINE. MESA GIVE IT BACK
TO LEGGETT, HIS 3RD CONSECUTIVE CARRY. AND REALLY PROBABLY SHOULD
HAVE KEPT GOING, TRIED TO GET A COMEBACK LANE, BUT
IT JUST SIMPLY WAS NOT THERE, AS CHRIS JULES, ONE
OF THE LEADING TACKLERS WON A CHAMPIONSHIP
DOWN AT CENTENNIAL. LET’S SEND IT
DOWN TO ASHLEY. HI, JEFF. SO WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT
WHAT RYAN FELKER HAS TO SAY ABOUT RATHEN
RICEDORFF, BUT WE HAVEN’T REALLY TALKED ABOUT WHAT
HIS TEAMMATES HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HIM. I SPOKE WITH LEFT
TACKLE ISIAH MOORE. AND HE SAID THAT HE’S THE
HARDEST WORKING PLAYER ON THIS TEAM. HE COMES HERE EVERY
DAY TO TRY TO BE GREAT. AND, OBVIOUSLY, LAST
SEASON DID NOT GO HIS WAY. HE GOT HURT, BUT HE
OVERCAME ADVERSITY. SO HIS TEAMMATES SAW THAT. HE WAS THERE EVERY
DAY IN THE SUMMER. HE WAS ON THE
SIDELINES FOR HIS TEAM. AND LOSING THAT 1ST GAME
REALLY BROUGHT THIS TEAM TOGETHER EVEN MORE, AND
WE’RE SEEING THAT RIGHT NOW IN THESE PAST COUPLE
OF GAMES AND TONIGHT AS WELL. BACK TO YOU. WELL, THANK YOU, ASHLEY. WELL, WHILE YOU WERE
TALKING, RICEDORFF HEAVY PRESSURE APPLIED BY CRAIG
BARNES OF SCOTTSDALE, BUT IT DIDN’T MATTER. HE HAD C.J. LEGGETT OUT ON THE
OUTSIDE AND HOOKS UP WITH HIM FOR 22 YARDS AND A 1ST DOWN. 8:24 ON THE CLOCK HERE,
2ND QUARTER ACTION. SET UP THAT LITTLE BUBBLE
SCREEN; KIND OF WHAT THEY USE TO CALL A
SAFETY VALVE. OFFENSE, NUMBER 56,
5-YARD PENALTY, 1ST DOWN. SO A 5-YARD PENALTY
AGAINST THE OFFENSE. MESA NOW LOOKING
AT A 1ST AND 15. ON THAT LAST PLAY, YOU SAW THE
COMPOSURE OF THIS QUARTERBACK. IN ALL ATTRIBUTES THAT
ASHLEY HAD TALKED ABOUT A MOMENT AGO, YOU CAN SEE
THIS IS A SPECIAL PLAYER IN THE WESTERN STATE’S
FOOTBALL LEAGUE. HE’S THE TOP RATED
QUARTERBACK IN THIS CONFERENCE. FACING A 1ST AND 15
IN PLUS TERRITORY. AND NOW SCRAMBLING OUT
OF THE POCKET, ELUDES ONE TACKLER, LAUNCHES IT DOWN FIELD
TO A WIDE OPEN RECEIVER. IT’S CLINTON,
THE TIGHT END. AND HE’S DOWN TO
THE 5-YARD LINE. THAT ONE’S GOING TO
GO FOR ABOUT 40 YARDS. AGAIN, BOTH THESE
QUARTERBACKS EXTENDING PLAYS WITH THEIR LEGS. RICEDORFF HAD TWO MEN IN
HIS FACE AS HE LAUNCHES THIS ONE. THEY’RE GOING TO MOVE THE
BALL BACK TO THE SEVEN. SO IT IS A
40-YARD PASS PLAY. RICEDORFF TO CLINTON,
1ST DOWN AND GOAL TO GO. AND THE SCREEN PASS WAS
SNUFFED OUT IMMEDIATELY LED BY CRAIG BARNES, WHO’S
MADE A COUPLE OF NICE PLAYS ON THIS DRIVE
HERE FOR SCOTTSDALE. AS THE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES
COMING OUT IN THAT ALL WHITE UNIFORM IN GRAVE
DANGER OF GOING DOWN 4 POSSESSIONS HERE. 21-NOTHING, MESA. ALL THE SCORING
DONE IN THE 1ST. 2ND DOWN AND GOAL. LOST YARDAGE ON THAT LAST
PLAY, DEFLECTED PASS. AND, AGAIN, IT WAS CRAIG
BARNES WHO STREAKED ACROSS AND BROKE UP THAT PASS,
AND IT’S INCOMPLETE. RIGHT NOW, RATHEN
RICEDORFF VERY UNHAPPY WITH HIMSELF; HAD HIS
HANDS ON HIS HIPS, ALMOST LOOKING DOWN
AT THE GROUND. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE
2ND PICK OF THE DAY HAD BARNES COME UP
WITH THAT CLEANLY. AND NOW YOU GOT 3RD AND
GOAL ALL THE WAY BACK, CLOSE TO THE 10-YARD LINE. THEY’LL SEND ONE MAN IN
MOTION, DIONTE SYKES, WHO SCORED THE GAME’S 1ST
ON A 20-YARD PASS PLAY. RICEDORFF FAKES THE RUN AND THEN
THROWS HIGH AND INCOMPLETE. IT WAS WELL COVERED
ALONG THE NEAR SIDE. OMARI MCCAULEY, NUMBER 14,
ONE OF THE CORNERS COMING IN. AND WE GOT A STOP IN PLAY
AND A FLAG DOWN ON THE FIELD. ROUGHING THE PASSER,
31, AUTOMATIC 1ST DOWN. WELL, CHRIS JULES WHO’S
BEEN ONE OF THE RARE STANDOUTS HERE TONIGHT FOR
SCOTTSDALE ON THE DEFENSE SIDE IS GOING TO BE
ASSESSED THE FOUL, ROUGHING THE PASSER. THAT IS AN AUTOMATIC 1ST
DOWN, AND THEY WITH ASSESS THE YARDAGE HALF THE
DISTANCE TO THE GOAL. SO C.J. LEGGETT IS THE LONE
SETBACK HERE FLANKING TO THE LEFT OF THE TALENTED
QUARTERBACK RATHEN RICEDORFF, THE SOPHOMORE, 6’1,
200 POUNDS, TENNESSEE NATIVE. TRIPS NEAR SIDE. THEY WILL SETUP
THE BUBBLE SCREEN. HERE IS RICHARDSON AROUND
THE LEFT EDGE AND INTO THE END ZONE. THERE IS A FLAG. AND THAT MIGHT BE A HOLD
ON ONE OF THE RECEIVERS THAT WAS DOWN THERE; ONE
OF TWO RECEIVERS BLOCKING FOR RICHARDSON. LET’S SEE IF THIS NEGATES
A 5-YARD TOUCHDOWN PASS; FOR RICEDORFF,
WOULD BE HIS 2ND. THIS DRIVE STARTED BACK
AT THE MESA 25-YARD LINE. 6:44 LEFT TO PLAY HERE. AND NOW MESA LOOKING AT
A 1ST AND GOAL TO GO FROM THE 12-YARD LINE. SO AFTER THE PENALTY,
I GUESS, YOU CAN’T COMPLETELY BE DISAPPOINTED
WITH YOUR RECEIVERS OUT THERE TRYING TO BLOCK
AND PAVE THE WAY. BUT THEY WERE
CAUGHT FOR HOLDING. AND NOW RICEDORFF
ON THE BLITZ. AND NOW THROWS AGAINST
THE GRAIN, HOOKS UP WITH CLINTON, THE TIGHT END. HE WILL GO UNABATED TO THE END
ZONE FOR A 12-YARD SCORE. THIS ONE COMES AT THE 6:35
MARK HERE IN QUARTER TWO. AND IT’S 27-NOTHING. SO SKYLOR CLINTON, WHO HAS
MADE A COUPLE OF CATCHES. BOY, I TELL YOU, THIS
IS JUST AN OUTSTANDING COMPOSURE BY THIS
MESA QUARTERBACK. HE WAS FLUSHED TO HIS
RIGHT, BUT HAD THE WHEREWITHAL TO LOOK BACK
LEFT, AND HE HAD A WIDE OPEN RECEIVER
IN THE FLATS. THERE’S THAT
SAFETY VALVE AGAIN. AFTER THE PLAY, DEAD BALL,
UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT, OFFENSE, NUMBER 9. THAT PENALTY WILL BE
ENFORCED ON THE ENSUING KICKOFF. BUSTILLOS IS NOW IN
FOR THE EXTRA POINT. HE’S BEEN PERFECT
TONIGHT; THREE FOR THREE. HE’S HAD A GREAT SEASON. THE PUNTER GRIMM,
THE HOLDER. AND THE EXTRA POINT
IS UP AND IT IS GOOD. 28-NOTHING. 6:35 LEFT TO GO HERE
IN THE 1ST HALF. IT’S ALL MESA
ON MCTV SPORTS. LET’S SEND IT DOWN TO
ASHLEY NEVEL TURF SIDE. SO AS WE’RE SEEING HERE
TONIGHT ALREADY, RATHEN RICEDORFF, IT’S 28-0, MCC. IT’S NO SHOCK WHERE HE’S
GOTTEN THIS COMPETITIVE EDGE FROM. I KNOW YOU’RE ALL PROBABLY
THINKING WHERE DOES HE GET THIS FROM? HIS DAD IS ACTUALLY
A FOOTBALL COACH. HE COACHED AT MESA. HE WAS THE HEAD COACH AT
WESTWOOD HIGH IN MESA. HE’S JUST COMPETITIVE. HIS MOM ALWAYS LOVED
SPORTS AS WELL. AND HIS WIFE PLAYED
VOLLEYBALL AT ASU. SO IT’S NO WONDER WHY HE’S
SO INVESTED INTO SPORTS. HE WAS ALSO VOTED TO
BE THE TEAM CAPTAIN, OVERWHELMING, BY HIS
PEERS, NOT BY COACHES. SO THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT
HIS CHARACTER, A LOT ABOUT HIM AS A QUARTERBACK, AND
WE’RE SEEING IT HERE AGAIN TONIGHT. BACK TO YOU. WELL, WE CERTAINLY HAVE. AND WE JUST SAW AN 85-YARD
KICK RETURN TOUCHDOWN BY TRAIVON CLAYTON, A YOUNG
MAN OUT OF MICHIGAN. AND, BOY, I’LL TELL YOU
WHAT, HE HAD A FULL STEAM WHEN HE HIT ABOUT
THE 35-YARD LINE. KATY BAR THE DOOR. THERE WAS NO CHANCE AS HE
RUSHES IN FOR 85 YARDS ON A KICK RETURN. AND IT IS NOW 28-6 AS THE
1ST TIME THAT WE’VE SEEN THIS MUCH LIFE ON
THAT SIDELINE FOR THE SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING
ARTICHOKES, AS LONG AS KICK IS GOOD. ERIC LOPEZ’S KICK IS GOOD. WITH 6:22 LEFT TO GO,
28-7 IN FAVOR OF MESA. YOU’RE WATCHING
MCTV SPORTS. WE’RE BACK HERE AT JOHN
RIGGS STADIUM, 28-7 IN FAVOR OF MESA. SO THE TWO TEAMS THE
LAST TWO TIMES THEY HAVE TOUCHED THE BALL
HAVE SCORED. AND IT WAS CLAYTON FOR
SCOTTSDALE WHO RAN IT 85 YARDS ON THE KICK RETURN
FOR A TOUCHDOWN, AND THE 1ST TIME THEY ARE ON
THE BOARD HERE TONIGHT. SCOTTSDALE COMING IN 0-4. SLIM CHANCE THAT THEY
WOULD MAKE THE VALLEY OF THE SUN BOWL AT THIS
POINT, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU LOOK AT THEIR REMAINING
SCHEDULE, A TOUGH MESA TEAM. THEY STILL HAVE SNOW AND WESTERN
COLLEGE ON THEIR SCHEDULE. BUT, FOR MESA, THEY COME IN HERE
UNDEFEATED IN THE CONFERENCE. MESA GETTING THE RETURN
THIS IS JOCQUI ELLISON. AND ELLISON IS UPENDED AS
HE TRIES TO GET THE BALL BACK UP TO THE
20-YARD LINE. IT’S A 16, 17-YARD
RETURN FOR ELLISON. AND REALLY GOOD COVERAGE
THERE ON THE SPECIAL TEAMS. THAT OUGHT TO MAKE THE
SPECIAL TEAMS COACH FOR SCOTTSDALE A
LITTLE HAPPIER. WITH 6:10 LEFT TO PLAY
HERE IN THE 1ST HALF, 28-7 MESA. AS WE MENTIONED A COUPLE
OF WEEKS AGO, A VERY IMPRESSIVE WIN
OVER SNOW COLLEGE. SNOW, FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT
FAMILIAR WITH THE WESTERN STATE’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE,
TRADITIONALLY A TOP FIVE TEAM YEAREND AND YEAR OUT. AND THIS MESA TEAM WENT UP
THERE AND REALLY TOOK IT TO THEM. THEY BEAT THEM 33-18. AND IT IS A RARITY FOR A
PHOENIX SCHOOL TO GO UP TO UTAH AND DEFEAT
SNOW COLLEGE. AS I SAID EARLIER, THEY
DEFEATED EASTERN ARIZONA, 24-17. THEY’RE ONLY LOSS THIS
YEAR WAS THE 1ST GAME AGAINST PHOENIX COLLEGE,
43-42 FINAL SCORE THERE FOR PHOENIX COLLEGE. 2ND DOWN AND 6, MESA. THEY’LL RUN THIS ONE
OVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE. I’LL TELL YOU, AT TIMES
THIS SCOTTSDALE DEFENSE PLAYING ON A DIFFERENT
LEVEL, BUT JUST HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PUT IT ALL
TOGETHER HERE TONIGHT, AS A TACKLE WAS MADE OVER
THERE ON THE FAR SIDE. I COULDN’T REALLY
MAKE OUT THAT NUMBER. IT LOOKED LIKE HIS
JERSEY WAS ALL FOLDED UP. SO YOUR GUESS IS
AS GOOD AS MINE. FIVE MINUTES LEFT TO GO
HERE 2ND QUARTER ACTION, 28-7. MESA LOOKING
AT A 3RD DOWN. CAN’T GET COMPLACENT
HERE IF YOU’RE THE THUNDERBIRDS. AND RICEDORFF IS GOING TO
BE GOBBLED UP FOR A SACK. WELL, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT,
CRAIG BARNES HOOKING UP WITH CHRIS JULES
ON THAT PLAY. AND THEY LITERALLY GOT TO THAT
QUARTERBACK WITHOUT A BLOCK. SO A THREE AND
OUT FOR MESA. 4:40. THE SITUATION WHERE YOU
HAD TWO OFFENSIVE LINEMAN TRYING TO CONTAIN THE LEFT
SIDE OF THE POCKET AND NEITHER ONE OF THEM
SUSTAINED A DECENT BLOCK. A LOT OF ARMS AND
HANDS IN THERE. AND NOW ALMOST
A BLOCKED PUNT. GRIMM GETS IT AWAY,
AND UNLOADS AN ABSOLUTE BEAUTY, A LINE DRIVE KICK. THAT’S GOING TO LAND ALL
THE WAY DOWN AT THE — WELL, LET’S SEE, THEY’RE
GOING TO MARK IT DOWN AT THE 20. RIGHT AROUND THE 23. SO A 57-YARD PUNT AFTER
GRIMM HAD TO SIDESTEP A COUPLE OF RUSHERS ON THAT
PLAY AND WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE LINE DRIVE KICK. AND SO SCOTTSDALE WILL
START DEEP INSIDE THEIR OWN TERRITORY AT THEIR
OWN 23-YARD LINE. 4:08 LEFT TO GO HERE
IN THE 1ST HALF. MESA WITH A 28-7 LEAD AS
THEY GET SET TO SETTLE IN ON THE DEFENSIVE HALF. WE’LL SEE WHO’S OUT
AT QUARTERBACK FOR SCOTTSDALE. IT’S GOING TO
BE ANDREW BUNCH. HE STARTED THE GAME. WE HAVEN’T SEEN MICAH
CAMPOS TOO MUCH. HE WAS THE LEADING RUSHER
LAST WEEK FOR SCOTTSDALE IN THAT GAME AGAINST PC. HANDOFF RUNNING LEFT SIDE. GET THE EDGE. AND SOME POSITIVE YARDAGE. LADARRIUS THOMAS
ON THE CARRY. AND THAT WAS NETTLETON. J.T. NETTLETON, A 205 POUNDER
ON THE TACKLE, AND A PICKUP OF SIX ON THE PLAY
BRINGS UP 2ND DOWN AND 4. MESA’S DEFENSE, WELL,
YOU’D HAVE TO GIVE THEM AN A GRADING HERE TONIGHT. THEY HAVE YET TO
GIVE UP ANY POINTS. THE ONLY SCORE FOR
SCOTTSDALE IN THIS GAME, CAME AT THE 6:22 MARK HERE
IN QUARTER TWO AND THE 85-YARD KICK RETURN
BY TRAIVON CLAYTON. 3:42 LEFT TO GO. BACK TO PASS IS BUNCH. AND ON ONE-ON-ONE
COVERAGE, IT’S OFF THE HANDS OF THE INTENDED
TARGET CANNELLA, WHO HAS JUST BEEN A NO-SHOW
HERE TONIGHT. AND I DIDN’T THINK THAT
WAS BAD COVERAGE BY RODNEY CARR. I THINK THIS HAS GOT TO
GO AGAINST THE OFFENSE. LET’S GET THE CALL. NO, THEY’RE GOING TO
CALL THIS AGAINST CARR. SO THAT WILL GIVE
SCOTTSDALE A 1ST DOWN WITH 3:33 LEFT TO GO HERE
IN THE 1ST HALF. NOT A BAD PASS BY THE
QUARTERBACK ANDREW BUNCH, LISTED 6-FOOT, 187. SO THEY GET A FRESH SET
OUT OF DOWNS, MARK THE BALL AT THE 44, INSIDE
ARTICHOKE TERRITORY. LADARRIUS THOMAS IS THE
LONE SETBACK, THE 226 POUNDER OUT OF LOUISIANA. BUT BUNCH WANTS TO GO TO
THE AIR AND RIFLES ONE TO THE FAR SIDE. AND IT WAS DROPPED BY
CANNELLA WHO IS THE VERY HIGHLY TALENTED — WELL,
HE’S LISTED AS A TIGHT END, BUT THEY HAVE BEEN
USING HIM AT WIDE RECEIVER HERE IN THE LAST
COUPLE OF WEEKS. HE WAS EXCLUSIVELY A WIDE
RECEIVER LAST WEEK, AND HAD A PRETTY GOOD GAME. AND A LITTLE SURPRISING
THAT THE SCOTTSDALE TEAM HASN’T WENT TO HIM AT
LEAST A COUPLE OF MORE TIMES THAN WHAT
WE’VE SEEN. NOW THEY’VE WENT TO HIM
ON TWO PLAYS IN A ROW. SO NOW 2ND DOWN AND 10. NOT MUCH THERE. AND IT’S GOING TO BRING
UP A 3RD AND LONG. LADARRIUS THOMAS IS GOING
TO BE STOPPED OUT ON THE WING. J.T. NETTLETON AMONGST A COUPLE
OF OTHERS THERE FOR MESA ON THE TACKLE. WITH 3:08 LEFT TO GO,
CLOCK CONTINUES TO WIND DOWN WITH A 3RD DOWN
AND 9 COMING UP. THIS DRIVE STARTED BACK
AT A 23-YARD LINE FOR SCOTTSDALE AT
THE 4:08 MARK. AS THE FIGHTING
ARTICHOKES TRAIL IT 28-7. SO 3RD DOWN AND 9. DOUG MADOSKI LOOKING ON. HERE’S BUNCH ROLLING OUT,
BEING FORCED OUT OF THE POCKET, AND IT
WAS BROKEN UP. WHAT A GREAT PLAY. ITAAEHAU ON THE PLAY. LET’S SEND IT
DOWN TO ASHLEY. DESPITE THE WAY THAT THIS
GAME IS GOING FOR MADOSKI, I TALKED TO CANNELLA. HE SAID THAT HIS MENTALITY
HAS NOT CHANGED AT ALL. HE’S STILL THE
HARD-NOSED GUY. HE KNOWS WHAT HE’S
TEACHING IS GOING TO WORK. AND ALTHOUGH IT’S BEEN
DIFFICULT FOR THEM, IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE THEY’RE
MAKING PROGRESS, BUT THEY REALLY ARE. THEY KNOW THAT THEY SHOULD
PROBABLY BE 4-0 RIGHT NOW JUST ON THE SITUATION
THAT HAD BEEN OCCURRING. THEY’RE NOT ABLE TO
CONVERT AND EXECUTE THE WAY THAT THEY WANT
TOWARD THE END OF GAMES. THEY’RE LOSING THESE GAMES
BY LITTLE ERRORS THAT COME BACK TO BITE THEM. THEY KNOW THAT EVENTUALLY,
IF EVERYONE’S DOING THEIR JOBS, THEY’RE STAYING
TOGETHER, THEY’RE EVENTUALLY GOING
TO BE ALL RIGHT. WE JUST DON’T KNOW HOW
LONG THAT’S GOING TO TAKE. BACK TO YOU. THE QUARTERBACK ANDREW
BUNCH INJURED ON THAT PLAY. AND HE’S GOING TO PROBABLY
COME OUT FOR AT LEAST ONE PLAY. THEY’RE GOING TO TEND
TO HIM ON THE SIDELINE. SCOTTSDALE ON THE 4TH
AND 9 SITUATION HERE. SO IT WILL BE
INTERESTING TO SEE. AND WE’LL KEEP A CLOSE
EYE IF SCOTTSDALE GETS THE BALL ONE MORE TIME BEFORE
THE HALFTIME, WHETHER OR NOT HE WILL
COME OUT OR NOT. SO MACIAS IS BACK STANDING
NEAR HIS OWN 30-YARD LINE. ELLISON BACK TO
RECEIVE FOR MESA. AND A WOBBLY KICK THAT’S
GOING TO BE FIELDED BACK NEAR THE 15-YARD
LINE, 40-YARD PUNT. ELLISON UP TO THE 20. HE COUGHED IT UP. AND SCOTTSDALE
MAY HAVE IT. AND THAT IS THE LAST THING
THAT MESA AND RYAN FELKER WANTED TO SEE IN THIS
SITUATION WITH A BIG LEAD GOING INTO HALFTIME. AND I BELIEVE THAT WAS
TRAIVON CLAYTON COMING UP WITH THE FUMBLE RECOVERY. WELL, AS I MENTIONED,
IT WAS A WOBBLY KICK. HE FIELDED IT CLEANLY,
BUT HE LOST IT WHEN HE WAS RUNNING LATTERLY
TO THE NEAR SIDE. IT WAS STRIPPED
AWAY THERE. YOU SAW THE ONE-HANDED
STRIP BY ERVIN GAVIN. 2ND TURNOVER OF
THE DAY FOR MESA. THEY HAD AN INTERCEPTION
EARLY IN THE 2ND QUARTER — OR LATE IN THE
1ST, I SHOULD SAY. AND ANDREW BUNCH WHO HAD
TO COME OFF THE FIELD DUE TO AN INJURY ON THE
LAST OFFENSIVE PLAY BY SCOTTSDALE GETS
IT RIGHT BACK. AND THEY GET 3 YARDS ON
THIS PLAY, AS LADARRIUS THOMAS RUNS IT OVER
THE RIGHT SIDE. SO THAT WILL BRING
UP A 2ND DOWN. YOU’RE LOOKING AT MAYBE
A 2ND DOWN AND 8, ONLY A GAIN OF 2, AND A GOOD
CONTAINMENT OVER THERE. A BIG DAY FOR NUMBER 11,
FOR MESA, JAMEER OUTSEY, WHO’S BEEN INVOLVED IN
THREE QUARTERBACK SACKS, TWO AND A HALF OFFICIALLY. AND WE’RE INSIDE THE
2-MINUTE MARK HERE IN QUARTER NUMBER TWO
WITH MESA LEADING 28-7. ANDREW BUNCH BRINGS THAT
BIG OFFENSIVE LINE TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. THEY NOW WORK OUT
OF THE PISTOL. THAT’S THE 1ST TIME HERE
TONIGHT AS THOMAS OVER THE RIGHT SIDE. AND HE’S GOING TO BE
TRACKED DOWN, HUNTED DOWN FROM BEHIND BY BRUCE
HESTER, 277-POUND DOWN LINEMAN. THAT WAS AN
OUTSTANDING PLAY. A YOUNG MAN WHO PLAYED HIS
HIGH SCHOOL BALL OVER AT MOUNTAIN POINTE, ANOTHER
QUALITY HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM HERE IN THE
VALLEY OF THE SUN; STATE CHAMPIONS BACK IN 2013. AND WE’RE DOWN TO THE
FINAL MINUTE HERE IN THE 1ST HALF. 3RD DOWN AND LONG, BUNCH
WITH TIME OVER THE MIDDLE. HE COMPLETES THE PASS. DID HE GET INTO
THE END ZONE? HE DID TOUCHDOWN, GEORGE
WOLTER, 168 POUNDER OUT OF SETON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL HERE
IN ARIZONA, OUT IN CHANDLER. THIS COMES WITH 47 SECONDS
LEFT TO PLAY HERE IN THE 1ST HALF. NOW THE EXTRA POINT. IT’S UP AND IT IS GOOD. AND WITH 47.7 LEFT
TO PLAY, IT IS NOW A 2-POSSESSION LEAD FOR
MESA, WHO LED AT ONE POINT 28-NOTHING. WE’RE BACK AT MESA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE, WELL, IT LOOKED LIKE A BLOWOUT
HERE FOR A WHILE, BUT SCOTTSDALE HAS PUT A
COUPLE OF TOUCHDOWNS UNANSWERED ON THE BOARD. AND THEY’VE CUT THAT
28-NOTHING DEFICIT IN HALF. AND NOW IT LOOKS TO
RETURN THE KICKOFF. ELLISON STILL BATTLING. AND SCOTTSDALE HAS BEEN
PRETTY GOOD ON RETURNS HERE TODAY ON
SPECIAL TEAMS. THEY WILL STOP THE
PROGRESS OF ELLISON NEAR THE 21-YARD LINE. WE DO HAVE A FLAG
DOWN ON THE PLAY. LEADING THE CHARGE ON
SPECIAL TEAMS, DEVON EDGE. WHAT A NAME DEVON EDGE OUT
OF CAMPO VERDE, OUT IN THE EAST VALLEY HERE. JOCQUI ELLISON GETS
SMOTHERED ON THE 21-YARD LINE. LOOKS LIKE THEY’LL START
OFFICIALLY AT THE 21 WITH 37 SECONDS LEFT TO GO. GOT A HOLDING PENALTY
AGAINST THE RETURN TEAM. SO IT LOOKS LIKE THEY’LL
MARK HIM ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE 11-YARD LINE. AND THAT IS WHERE
MESA WILL START. SO THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE
TO GO VIRTUALLY THE LENGTH OF THE FIELD IF THEY WANT
TO GET INTO THE END ZONE WITH 37.2 SECONDS LEFT TO
GO HERE IN QUARTER TWO. C.J. LEGGETT IS THE
LONE SETBACK. RICEDORFF, WHO HAS HAD
TWO TOUCHDOWN PASSES HERE TODAY, AS MESA BUILD
A 28-NOTHING LEAD. BUT SCOTTSDALE HAS SCORED
ON THEIR LAST TWO TIMES THEY’VE TOUCHED THE BALL;
ONE ON OFFENSE, ONE ON SPECIAL TEAMS. BOY, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT,
THAT WAS A FINE JOB THERE. YOU SAW THE SPEED OF B.J. PELT OUT OF THUNDERBIRDS
HIGH SCHOOL IN NORTH PHOENIX. RICEDORFF, THE NATIONAL
JUNIOR COLLEGE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK. HE HAS BEEN PLAYER OF
THE WEEK IN THE WESTERN STATE’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE
SEVERAL TIMES THIS YEAR. AND THAT IS GOING TO BE
IT, AS THE ZEROS ARE ON THE BOARD. MESA WILL GO INTO THE
LOCKER ROOM WITH A 28-14 LEAD. COME BACK. WE’LL HAVE THE SECOND HALF
IN JUST A MOMENT, MCTV SPORTS. WELL, IT’S HALFTIME HERE. 28-14 IN FAVOR OF THE
MESA THUNDERBIRDS. AND LET’S SEND IT
DOWN TO ASHLEY NEVEL. HEY, GUYS, I’M STANDING
HERE WITH DOUG MADOSKI. YOUR TEAM IS TRAILING
BUT YOU SCORED A CRUCIAL TOUCHDOWN THERE IN THE
CLOSING SECONDS OF THE GAME. HOW IMPORTANT WAS THAT FOR
THEM AND HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CARRY THAT MOMENTUM
INTO THE SECOND HALF? I THINK THAT WHEN YOU
REALLY LOOK AT IT, I MEAN, WE SPOTTED THEM 14 POINTS
ON THE FUMBLE THAT WE GAVE UP ON THE QUARTERBACK
ROLLING OUT, AND THEN THE FUMBLE ON THE
KICKOFF RETURN. WE SPOTTED THEM 14 POINTS. THIS IS THE TAIL OF
OUR SEASON TRUTHFULLY. WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT, I
MEAN, IT’S A 14-POINT GAME. BUT IT’S SELF-INFLICTED
WOUNDS RIGHT NOW. WE’RE GOING TO GO IN THERE
AND SEE WHAT WE CAN GET DONE. WE KNOW THAT WE’VE GIVEN
THEM EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO BLOW US OUT RIGHT NOW. AND IT’S A 14-POINT GAME,
MAYBE WE GOT A SHOT. SO WE’LL SEE HOW IT GOES. THANKS, COACH. BACK TO YOU. ALL RIGHT, ASHLEY. WELL, THAT BIG 85-YARD
TOUCHDOWN BY TRAIVON CLAYTON REALLY GAVE
THE SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES A BURST AS THEY
GO INTO THE LOCKER ROOM TRAILING 28-14. SECOND HALF’S COMING
UP NEXT ON MCTV SPORTS.
