Barcelona and Real Madrid face El Clasico being postponed amid growing political unrest

The upcoming Spanish Clásico is increasingly likely to be postponed amid worries over the political unrest in Catalunya   Barcelona are due to host Real Madrid in Spain’s biggest fixture at Camp Nou on October 26  But this week nine Catalan political leaders were jailed on Monday for between nine and 13 years, for their part in the controversial independence referendum in 2017  That has sparked political unrest in the region with El Prat airport in Barcelona temporarily closed on Tuesday, grounding 100 flights  The Catalan Football Federation suspended all matches in the region on Monday, although that ruling does not affect La Liga matches or the Spanish national team  However, another demonstration has been planned on the same day in the city.   La Liga have made a request to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to switch the match to the Santiago Bernabeu  The RFEF says the move comes in “exceptional circumstances beyond our control”  But it’s understood both Barcelona and Real Madrid are against switching the fixture  Both have been asked to give their views, with neither the federation nor league chiefs wanting next weekend’s match played at Camp Nou   The Spanish government are also opposed to the game going ahead as scheduled, with a source telling Marca: “It seems to us that, with the way things are going, we consider, along with La Liga and the RFEF, that, for security reasons, it’s not reasonable to play this match as it is scheduled ”  As such, alternative dates are already being looked at, with December 4 or 18 likely  The decision is in the hands of the RFEF’s Competition Committee, composing one representative from the league, one from the federation and one independent member  More meetings are planned on Friday, although a decision may not be made until Monday, with the ultimate ruling not down to either club  Following the sentencing by Spain’s Supreme Court, Barcelona issued a statement in which they declared: “Prison is not the solution ”  They also added: “Now more than ever, the club asks all political leaders to lead a process of dialogue and negotiation to resolve this conflict, which should also allow for the release of convicted civic and political leaders  “FC Barcelona also expresses all its support and solidarity to the families of those who are deprived of their freedom ”
